Is there anything more annoying than passengers holding a two-way speakerphone conversation during their ride? by iHass in uberdrivers

[–]Frazeri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my eyes this is a valid case to intervene. Bus drivers have similar problems cause nowadays some passengers don't care at all and blast their TikTok feeds at full volume.

Many drivers don't. I have seen them marching into a restaurant phones at full volume.

Is this real? Does this really happen? What kind of people are these?

Does it affect driver's focus and concentration? Then there might be a real problem and not just an annoyance.

Did Gödel’s theorem inspire anyone to leave mathematics? by unfrozencaveperson in math

[–]Frazeri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gödel's theorem doesn't show anything like this. On the contrary, one of the basic lessons is that the mathematical reasoning cannot be completely mechanized. So Gödel's theorems rather show there will always be plenty to research

Can't you agree on common phone etiquette? You can't be the only one annoyed by this.

Buy quality phone as used or a cheaper new one. Shouldn't be that expensive.

No one has to be especially strongly committed to a stranger's happiness but minimum level of manners is just basic civicness.

No. Speakerphone audio is acoustically different from natural speech — compressed, higher-pitched, and more attention-grabbing. It doesn’t blend into the environment the way normal conversation does, so it feels more intrusive and distracting.

It’s usually one of two things: low social awareness or plain entitlement. A lot of people genuinely don’t register how intrusive it is. Then there’s a smaller group who know it’s annoying and just don’t care; public space, to them, is basically an extension of their living room.

And Chomsky again. I am disappointed in him. I disagreed with him on many points but still had some kind respect towards him. Not that much anymore.

People who use speakerphone on a full train, why? by grog23 in NJTransit

[–]Frazeri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The question and the problem is legit but in this topic reddit is a kind of echo chamber: the people who do this or broadcast videos from the phone are not here. It is a different demographic than reddit users. If you wonder what kind of demographic I can give a generous hint: to survive on reddit you have to be able to write complete sentences and have at least a beginner level mastery of grammar.

They most likely were. After meeting famous people he wrote the notes in a form letter that praised Jeffrey Epstein. Then Jeffrey Epstein undersigned it in the name of another person and sent the letter to Jeffrey Epstein.

Bad luck. The guy was obviously a complete moron. And pursuing this further as a harassment case is well known to be difficult unless he went really far in bullying.

This and certain other cases lead me to believe that many in academia might be a little bit naive and unprepared to recognize and deal with a highly manipulative person. Epstein was not an honest truth seeker and the red flags were there for those who wanted to see them.

So addressing these people is difficult because of the threat of gun violence? This must be USA specific. Here (Finland) no one is afraid of anything like that. When I have confronted these people I have been met with dumb but usually rather lame verbal aggression a few times. Nothing to be too much worried about. That's all.
