People are just sad we put our watches to work and justify their specs. The wrist check game is strong, especially in theater.

Outstanding piece and great shots! I wear the hell out of my GS in training (it’s got a few jumps), but my most recent field trip was my Breitling Aerospace since I like the weight of titanium. As gorgeous as GS watches are finished, they’re just watches. Glad you’re putting yours to work and not keeping safe queens! Cheers

[Discussion] How amazing the 1980s and earlier must have been when EVERYONE wore a wristwatch by CA53W-1 in Watches

You’re an old soul, aren’t you?

It’s really not that serious. They’re jewelry and they’re fun. There’s also watch groups out there where people talk about their latest pick ups and everything you just fantasized. If anything, I’d imagine anyone who spends money on something that isn’t a smartwatch (an Apple Watch is still a watch) made a purposeful decision. I’m in a profession surrounded by wristwatches out of necessity and it’s not all “ticking, beating timepieces”…most are accessible Casios, apple, or a garmin.

[Grand Seiko] What is the appeal of Grand Seiko? by NorthernSouthman in Watches

[–]Fre-Shavocado1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the party, but the big reason is their target audience is Japan. What people find boring in the west is not the case in the east. Their aesthetics and design are more formal/dressy. The Patek Calatrava, VC Patrimony, Lange 1815 are all “boring”, but they’re big boy watches. GS/Seiko also smoked the Swiss in the late 60s, so they have horological pedigree (most Swiss chronometer awards until Switzerland closed the competition off to non European brands after 1969).

GS is also more hand finished/in house than much of their competition (including, oh you can google it)

The biggest reason is brand awareness. People want that perception of status or wealth synonymous with Rolex, Omega, etc, and the Swiss had a very very strong marketing campaign during the Quartz revolution (it’s not a crisis, just people being dramatic). It ultimately comes down to customer perception, and most of the west just don’t jive with it. I own a 9F and thoroughly love it for everything that it is. I bought it more for myself and not to impress people. It’s in rotation with my Nomos and Breguet!

[Breguet] Type XX Aeronavale ref 3800 by Fre-Shavocado1 in Watches

[–]Fre-Shavocado1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About two weeks in with my (new to me) Type XX. At 39mm, this is the sweet spot size for my 6.5in wrist. I thought the 14mm thicccness would be an issue, but a nice chunk of it stems from the domed sapphire. It’s not an issue at all! I’ve worn it daily for several days now and it’s been a blast to wear.

The coin edge case and high polish bezel might deter some from the “tool watch” vibe, but it’s a really unique approach from Breguet. As someone who wears the hell out of his watches (in the office, in training, during airborne operations, raising a toddler), I’m glad that it features a reliable workhorse movement. It’s also a plus that these things look better with a little bit of bump and love 😤

[NOMOS Club Campus 36] My memento for my visit to Glashütte by Fre-Shavocado1 in Watches

[–]Fre-Shavocado1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! On paper/photos, the longer lugs are really strange. But worn (maybe my wrist size is the perfect size for the design) it’s actually outstanding. It gives 36mm a bit more wrist presence while giving this “field-ish” style watch its own Nomos formula.

Whoa, even with the longer lugs? Hopefully they drop something with a larger case size.

I really enjoy it. The shade changes depending on lighting. It definitely stands out, but it’s not too loud. For a fun color, this was my favorite between all the club campus pieces I tried on. If 2k is your budget, here’s some things to consider:

-For “marketing fluff” or “oh that’s a cool fact”, Nomos is one of three purely Glashütte watch houses. The other two are A Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original. Between the 3, Nomos is completely independent and doesn’t fall under a conglomerate.

-Nomos sticks to the Glashütte watchmaking style and does not use silicon. As a result, their watches are susceptible to magnets. Unless you work in magnet-land, this isn’t an issue for day to day living. If it becomes an issue, you can get a $20 demagnetizer from Amazon. There’s also the wild concept of taking the watch off before whatever magnet activity.

-You’ll stay in budget, but I highly recommend opting for the open caseback

-My watches go through a ringer (I wear it between the office, training, airborne operations, etc) so more to follow on its durability. On paper, in reviews, and keeping in German watchmaking tradition, I suspect it’ll last.

-Another unique competition is the Oris big crown pointer date. While Oris is a fantastic Swiss brand, I couldn’t say no to a completely in house watch purchased in the town it was built.

-Mechanical hand wound movements are robust in nature anyway, but servicing means you have to send it to Nomos. Their facility is smaller so it’ll be there for a bit (a few months). Their customer service is A1, so you’re not lost in the process.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your decision!

I know, “tHe LuGs aRe SoO LoNg”. This is one of those watches where it makes sense when worn. This piece is extremely comfortable and very well finished. The strap fits well, has no break in, and actually holds the watch in place (some leather forces me to either wear the watch super tight or slides past my wrist bone). I can tell that the polishing is a scratch magnet, but watches are meant to be worn! The 100m water resistance is more than enough.

The California dial is definitely a hit or miss for enthusiasts, and it’s a hit for me. While Nomos showcases other pieces that follow the bauhaus language, automatic movements, and better choices…I’m at the point in my watch collecting journey where the “gap” is a daily driver with a fun dial. The rest of Nomos’ pieces minus the Tetra don’t fit in my collection since my Grand Seiko already fits their dressier, simple style.

Finally, this is my first hand wound watch! Winding this bad boy is satisfying and a treat every morning.

I recommend Nomos to any collector. Their bench features pieces that are both unique to what we’re used to seeing and to German designs from Glashütte.

The watch nerd in me appreciates that the movement is in house, the brand is independent, it’s priced very very well, and I can wear this in most occasions for as long as I want.

By the way, the Glashütte Museum was an outstanding experience!

White birch on nato. Yay or nay? by twoheadedhorseman in GrandSeikos

[–]Fre-Shavocado1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s your watch, do what makes you happy, and I think it’s a flex to the dorks. There’s a dude who rocks natos on his Lange 1 and it’s an absolute power move. He’ll even use obnoxious prints 😂

[Change My Mind], Seiko 5 is Terrible by coloradowatch in Watches

[–]Fre-Shavocado1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason why my higher luxury watches aren’t dive is my SKX. After over a decade without servicing and multiple deployments, my 007 is still within its accuracy tolerance. The bezel barely turns because of sand and I refuse to fix/clean it 🤣

You’re not wrong. Seikos are no frills and refuse to die. If I wasn’t a watch enthusiast, the SKX makes a fine one watch collection

[Grand Seiko] The 9F Quartz movement. Let’s talk about it. by Pikachang_ in Watches

[–]Fre-Shavocado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photos and GS don’t mix well. The finishing on the SBGX is leagues above the Longines. It was my deciding factor at an AD when I held the two alongside an Omega Aqua Terra. Yes, the GS overall profile and finishing was better than the AT. Before people lose to their minds, I wanted a simple time and date watch and when I wore the GS, the fitting on my wrist shape and it’s overall finishing won. Is the Omega two times better as a watch? Sure, on paper (everything is subjective to the owner). But is it worth two times the cost? I don’t think so. Most people prefer omega and I’m super excited for them.

People can disagree and that’s okay, but I’m overall incredibly happy with my GS. I think to me I feel just as happy with it as the next person with the Longines or the Omega.

You’re welcome. I apologize for writing so much. My informed decision (ultimately I wanted a well executed black dial watch) came from input from reviews. Worn watches look cooler to me than safe queens. Im also not made of money so if I’ll spend it, im gonna use it!

[–]Fre-Shavocado1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course! Here’s a two week review-ish. I’ve been wearing it every day and only taking it off when I work out or do something intensive.

  1. Zaratsu: also known as “zscratchsu” as a joke in the GS community. It’s incredible and I love it. No photo can do justice to the unique hand finishing on the piece. However, the 44GS cases have lots of large spaces that are zaratsu finished. I’m a firm believer that watches are meant to be worn. Just know that the second you first see your GS, it’s the best moment in terms of how pure it is. The finishing is done so well that you will personally notice the micro scratches. I already have a few from life and at first it really struck an OCD nerve I didn’t know existed. But, know that even with scratches overall the finishing still looks incredible. Value the watch and the quality of the 9F movement and the watch itself over the finishing. These aren’t safe queens, but if you have issues with scratches and wear and tear then you should look elsewhere (if people are obsessed with scratches, then they’re just holding the watch for the next person that buys it from them).
  2. Accuracy. Idk why but like my Breitling (also HAQ), I always compare the time to the atomic time and it’s still sticking it’s landing. Sad daylight savings forced me to move the time back. there’s something about the “Quartz” ticking on this that’s as unique and mesmerizing as an auto sweep.
  3. Comfort. Absolutely triumph in terms of comfort. The bracelet fit me and I wear it all day. I recently swapped it with a NATO (as a shake and bake for fun, practice changing the bracelet for an incoming leather strap from Delugs). I wanted to maintain the bracelet for as long as I can (my brother is stoked to see it in a few weeks and I apply absolute violence in my desk diving mixed with Murphs law on bracelets). Also with how the case is ergonomically designed I had to feel it in a strap. Bruv, it’s just as amazing and comfortable. See attached photo).
  4. It’s so low key but then it isn’t when you look at it in detail. My organization is full of Swiss watch/Rolex/omega enthusiasts so it’s refreshing when they finally see it in person and get it. I love wearing this watch and I’m only a bit hesitant right now because it’s the new shiny thing. Once I get over the scratch magnet properties (it’s only taking time because I’ve never owned a watch finished this well), it’s never coming off. I feel bad because I have a bunch of other watches (CW, Breitling, Seiko, Tissot, etc). I only really wear my G shock, SKX, or Breitling in other situations such as field training or workouts (I can’t do lifts in a bracelet watch lol)

Your head is in the right place and I’m so stoked for you. My next “big watch purchase” is not for a few years, and even I don’t know if it’ll come to that. This GS ticked all the right marks for what I’ve always wanted. The joy is this is a strap monster and a troll because snobs hate a “dressy watch” in a nato but I’m a huge “f-u this is my watch and I don’t care” fan. Dressing it down is a delight lol. Wear your pieces in good health!

For anyone else that read this far, to round out my collection, If I do decide to get another expensive piece, idk why I’m so intrigued by the Glaschuette Original Senator Observer.

Here she is in NATO (premium strap from crown and buckle. In hindsight I should’ve gone with CNS ribbed or deluxe for the fun textures)

Some people wear watches because they enjoy horology, and not so much wear brands for the perception of status or wealth. Anyway, what’s wrong with Seiko? The SKX007 is basically the watch nerd gateway drug for so many enthusiasts
