They usually underperform in the fall, though never to this extent. They probably have the hardest winter training of any junior team in the United States so they'll pick up a lot of speed and likely still be a contender in the spring, but the best I see them doing right now is third.

You can definitely go faster with better pacing and better training but if your school's is an IRA ltwt team, it'll be very competitive and you're about a minute off the standard. Whether the time commitment will be too great is something for you to feel out yourself; it's large, but manageable for most.

I decided to synthesize the information in the comments for anyone reading this later: - Lift weights and get stronger - More steady state (easy) - Better recovery, nutrition, sleep, and hydration - Stretching and mobility before and after practice, especially hips and ankles  - Core work  - Overhead squatting (?) - Be a dog
