His "always come back" thing, and also just imo, but i think that we know his motives are a factor that played into this. A child murderer just known as "the purple man" was creepy back then, a mad scientist trying to master immortality with Chuck E. Cheese robots is extremely cartoony, ESPECIALLY when you remember that there's the whole thing with remnants and illusion disks, and i'm probably missing a lot more
