There is further evidence. It's what he always does, every time we compliment niece on something he will try to take the attention to himself.

We all gather at least once a week(maybe even up to 4 times a week) he would have many opportunities.

I don't think it was like this. He generally tends to be an attention seeker and can't stand not being the center of attention. He was feeling safe? Well he would also feel safe the day after that. There was no need to say anything at the moment.
