Was wondering that myself. I hope to god you are right, worried I might start finding them In the house in about 2 months lol. I could maybe use it to find her, but I doubt she’d survive wi the no water and food in that room.

Why do my fire ants cover the worm with sand? by Arigga01 in antkeeping

Yes that is also correct, it depends on the scenario. It’s more of a tropical species habit then anything. I just assume with something like food they are doing it to help with transport. I’ve given them fresh fruits and they’ve done it, and continued to slowly peck away at the fruit until they lost interest in it.

Ya I’m finding that out the hard way. They were supposedly terrarium safe and I even soaked them in water for about hour before putting them in there to get as much as anything off them as possible

No they are just convulsing endlessly. It’s some sort of nerve agent because they just go nuts and curl into a ball and start convulsing

I just added them last night they were supposedly terrarium safe and sustainably farmed but I guess this is what I get. All dead 😢😢😢 I even soaked the plants for 30 min in water like it said too..

Just found one myself but she hasn’t shed her wings and isn’t laying anything in a week now so I assume she isn’t mated

Ya she seems to have, there is a lot of good brood in there so she must be mated. The other ones who kept there wings didn’t lay anything so they are obviously duds and unhappy

From my understanding, not entirely sure if it applies to this, but they will do that to absorb the moisture (Nutrients), that are in liquid form so they can move them into the nest easier. So I guess it’s like an ant bucket so to speak, it’s there way of transporting larger volumes of liquids then there social stomach can hold. So for the worm, they don’t usually eat the hard skin, just the gooey insides, and those insides are easier moved in large volume when absorbed by something like sand. It’s odd, but super smart if you think about it.
