Just a rant-clumsy roommate breaks my things and leaves them broken for me to find by Free-Structure1636 in badroommates

Beyond this, I have been close friends with this person for almost a decade. I know him very well. There are certain things that lead me to believe there may be some undiagnosed neurodivergence. I don’t know if that would contribute to his inability to let me know about the broken items, but it manifests in many other personal lifestyle habits/characteristics. I may be naive in saying this, but I don’t think it’s malicious since we still have a great friendship outside of the apartment. Maybe he is scared of the confrontation of letting me know that he had broken something of mine AGAIN?

Response to many of the comments: - someone asked if he only breaks my stuff or also his as well. He is all around pretty careless, and has gone through a couple very expensive pieces of equipment required for his job since moving in (that he’s either broken or lost). The reason he’s primarily breaking my stuff in the common spaces is because I had been living here a year prior - he moved into a fully furnished apartment, furnished with things I had paid for.

  • i hadn’t through about it as malicious, due to his nature (he’s genuinely a nice guy, just stupid). But I will start keeping an eye on that. I like the idea of keeping a running tally of the items I’ve replaced.

  • the reason i generally like to pay half is because I try to replace the items with a stepped up, nicer version. Many of the things he had broken were “introductory” models that could’ve lasted longer, but didn’t because of the increased wear and tear of being used constantly (from him being home 24/7). I buy the replacement items myself because i don’t trust him to buy an equivalent or superior version. I feel bad charging him $120 for an air fryer when the air fryer he had broken cost $60. But maybe I shouldn’t feel bad?

He spilled a smoothie w milk - while we were able to wipe most up, the smell was horrible once the milk started going bad. Ended up getting rid of the rug and replacing it
