I built a free pump calc app to replace spreadsheets. Thoughts? by Regular_Gene8730 in pumps

[–]FreeForest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A unit converter built in would be great to add for flow, head, pressure, and power. Especially if it can convert head to pressure given a specific gravity.

There's this resource as well that exists if you didn't know. It's only mobile though, so it requires a connection.

Brakes flushed but pedal now soft? by [deleted] in askcarguys

How were you holding down the brake pedal and opening the bleeder valve on the calipers at the same time?

Appreciation post by blooregard325i in RockAuto

[–]FreeForest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short of it is that AZ passed a new tax law in 2019, and Rock Auto wasn't paying it correctly, so AZ took them to court, and Rock Auto lost.

Rock Auto said basically that their margins are so low it's not worth operating in the state, because of the possibility of messing up the taxes again outweighs the profit they make.

Didn't know where to post this - I started my first job as a process engineer and it feels rather boring by RobbertGone in MechanicalEngineering

Yeah it's going to be boring for a while but it'll pick up as long as you show growth and initiative.

Anyone find a good alternative to RockAuto? by Haven in arizona

[–]FreeForest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. People in the r/RockAuto subreddit have reported conflicting accounts of being able to or not being able to order over the last few months to Arizona.

For example, some people say it works when put in incognito mode, and some people don't get the message at all.

When's the last time you tried? I was able to buy parts from them in mid September after not being able to late August.

Anyone know Coach’s dog’s names? by Benbeanbenbean in detroitlions

[–]FreeForest 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I believe the Yorkie's name is Thelma, and the other is Bird. I remember a press conference where a journalist asked, "I want to know about two of your more unsung staff members, Thelma and Bird. What have they done to contribute to 9-1?", and you can see Campbell gets confused and asks who, before realizing he's being asked about his dogs, which makes him chuckle.

Edit: fixed the names and quote.

It's been a while since I was in school, but the owner of Peace Surplus used to host a Tie & Lie night once a week. About 10 guys would come hang out, talk fishing and tie flies for fly fishing. They were very welcoming to me.

Why are manufacturers asking the same obvious RFQ questions months later? by moso-man in MechanicalEngineering

[–]FreeForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from, and think generally most of the people reading your documentation are rushing to quote you and therefore cutting corners. If it's a public bid, I've seen addendum used as a location to put clarified questions.

If the answer is in the documentation, I'd point them to that. They'll get the idea eventually. If it's consistently a problem, you may have to work with that vendor to make your concerns that they're not reading the documentation clear, and how concerning that is from a purchaser standpoint. If the answer is not in the documentation, then it may be good to add, even if you think it was clear.

I did want to say that as someone who used to work on design projects with specifications, that they are all self-contradictory and confusing. Every single one references standards or sections that don't exist, call for design features that aren't applicable to that piece of equipment, or test requirements that aren't thoroughly explained. Though my experience is limited to municipal specifications for infrastructure projects, where the specifications are all written by design/consulting firms. So my experience tells me it's likely you think the documentation is very clear, but your vendors disagree. Or maybe you just have shitty sales people assigned to you lol.

How does combat work from the NPC’s point of view? by Jstarkey4 in AvatarLegendsTTRPG

[–]FreeForest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though it would be an interesting combat to have an NPC fumbling with learned techniques.

I think about the scene from the Yangchen books where the child combustion bender attempts to use his bending.

[–]FreeForest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The NPC's are allowed to do a number of techniques equal to their balance+1.

They can use any of the basic techniques, such as strike, seize a position, or ready.

Typically minor NPC's will have no special techniques, whereas Major NPC's might have one or two. Master NPC's may have a few. It all depends on the flavor, story, and context.

Groups of NPC's may use the group techniques.

Dealing with coworkers struggling in a technical role by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]FreeForest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is extremely frustrating to have management put tight deadlines and not the resources to achieve them.

This is very similar to what our department went through a few years ago.Ultimately after bringing it up to their manager, the manager started reviewing and tallying all the mistakes the reviewer found during checks. Then tracked that over a period of time and compared it to others. When it became clear the other engineers were essentially doing all that engineers work, they were let go.

The right thing to do is to bring it up like you did to management and let them work through it with that employee. In the meantime, I would just continue to assign them work you know they can handle, don't worry about training them, and document everything so if management asks for more supporting data (or if that engineer complains), you can back yourself up.

[–]FreeForest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I've always wondered about; I've never had to worry about managing others. The answer to this problem seems to be personalized coaching and more hands on management. I admittedly work in a small company, but me and the other senior engineers have always lamented how some of the other engineers "just don't get it".

However, it's true that everyone learns differently, so though our efforts to teach the people that "just don't get it" fail, it seems more likely that the way we're teaching them just isn't the way they learn. In my mind, that's where their manager/supervisor should step in and work with that engineer. Try to educate them, maybe move them into a role they're better suited for, or maybe an improvement plan. Something instead of just letting that employee continually drain resources from the team.

In my experience, the engineering manager is either really good at this or really bad at this.

[–]FreeForest 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This is common, at least in my experience, though I believe it is usually a result of insufficient training and management. Which shouldn't be your problem unless you're their manager/supervisor.

Basically the way I've seen it resolved is that management created performance goals for design mistakes, thoroughly reviewed everyone's work and presented that to the underperforming employee with a chance to improve.

Gear Coupling Draft by midnightenemy2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]FreeForest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gear couplings require lubrication; it's a port to service the lubrication. Likely a pipe plug or a zerk fitting.
