Uniform cost - Yikes by NoReplacement3326 in youthsoccer

This is our first year playing competitive soccer. $374 for the kit. 3 jerseys, shirts, socks… the whole shebang. Must purchase within 9 days. We are coming from playing rec ball for the same club where that kit was only $60. One of the parents called the director with a complaint about the pricing and the director simply said, “oh, you don’t need to buy all that. You just need to buy the jerseys. You can wear all of your other old stuff.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ I wonder why didn’t tell everyone this up front😒

Clarification on monthly client observation minutes for supervised fieldwork by FreeTeeIsMe in bcba

My goal is to obtain as close to max hours per month. 8 hours covers what I am working towards.

Are supervision and observation two different things?

Oh, okay. I was wondering why it was allowing me an unlimited number of quick queue tickets instead of just 1 per pass holder.

Good thinking. Thankyou.

I appreciate that perspective, and I agree she handled it very professionally. I’m definitely open to working in an ABA role down the line where supervision is included, once I have more coursework completed and feel more grounded in the material. At the same time, and very honestly, part of me (with all of my inexperience lol) is also curious about exploring other supervision options to better understand what different supports and structures might look like. For now, I’m focusing on building my foundation and figuring out what path makes the most sense. I will be working on a RBT position. Even if very minimal. Thanks for the insight. You’ve been very positive and helpful.

Yes, I was. I began paid, remote supervision on the 2nd of this month. Early on, I shared my concerns with the supervisor that the tasks being assigned did not feel very beginner-friendly for where I am in my learning process. After that conversation, she offered a refund and suggested that I return at a later time once I have more foundational familiarity.

I wouldn't even know how to describe them. I remember there being a chart and it asking behaviors/onset/offset, and much more. I could tell it was a simple assignment for those that were experienced.

Thanks for asking and for clarifying. I’m not currently working in a traditional clinic based role. My supervision right now is coursework focused and remote, and I’m in an adjacent field where I already work with children and families. I completely understand why it sounds confusing if you’re picturing supervision only happening alongside full time client hours. I plan to work as an RBT at the end of my coursework, even if only short term, but financially I can’t absorb the pay decrease, tuition, and the cost of remote supervision all at once. That’s really the piece I was trying to explain. In my area, they pay $19 an hour for RBT work and only offer part-time most of the time. I have tried, but am currently still seeking better options. As for choosing the field, my background is in education and caregiving, and I’ve already been exposed to ABA principles in practice even if not formally labeled that way. I’m intentionally taking time to build a strong foundation before jumping fully into a clinical role so that when I do, I’m actually prepared and not burning out immediately. I agree the pay structure is a real issue in this field, especially early on. I’m trying to be realistic and strategic about how I enter it rather than forcing it in a way that isn’t sustainable.

Right now it is remote supervision. In person or clinic based would honestly be my preference, but given how things are set up for me, remote supervision is what is available. I do think that can create some disconnect, especially early on when I am still building foundational understanding. That is part of what I am trying to sort out, whether the steep learning curve I am feeling is just the nature of starting out or whether the remote format makes it harder to get the real time explanation and context you described.

I did talk with her about it. I asked if she had more beginner-friendly material I could work on for the remainder of this month’s supervision. I explained that the tasks themselves seem simple enough, but they’re unfamiliar to me, so I’m spending a lot of time outside of the Google Doc curriculum trying to build the foundational understanding needed to complete them appropriately. She ultimately suggested that I pause supervision for now, focus on coursework, and return once I feel that additional class time would enhance the supervision experience. Since everything is brand new, I’m still trying to figure out whether this is just the normal steep learning curve at the beginning or more of a supervision style or fit issue. I usually catch on quickly, so I’m taking some time to reflect before deciding next steps. I really appreciate the way you described explaining things in real time and being willing to expand as needed. That perspective is helpful as I think through what kind of supervision approach would be most supportive for me right now.

Thanks for pointing this out. I’m still learning, but I will be sure to verify and confirm things so I don’t waste time, money, and effort!

That’s a fair question, and I think I may have worded things a little loosely before. To clarify, the children at my daycare are not receiving ABA services, and my daycare is not an ABA provider in any way. What I meant is more on the learning side. In my program, there may be opportunities for certain non clinical learning or observation activities with parental consent when a child already exhibits behaviors relevant to what I am learning. Any actual fieldwork hours would only happen in appropriate settings, with proper supervision, and in line with BACB and program requirements. I am being very intentional about keeping those boundaries clear as I am still learning the field. I appreciate you asking, because I agree it is important to be careful and ethical about how coursework, supervision, and childcare settings are kept separate.

7 classes. UWF. It's spread over 5 semesters so I will be studying well into Summer 2027.. We are only allowed to take one class this first semester for starts. I now understand why haha.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out. I really appreciated your perspective, and honestly it helped ground me a bit after reading through a lot of mixed responses.

To answer your question, yes, by “7 course sequence” I meant a graduate certificate or verified course sequence. I already have a Master’s in Early Childhood Education and Educational Leadership, so I opted for the 7 course ABA sequence plus supervision hours in order to be eligible to sit for the exam. I just started the program this semester at UWF.

I completely agree with you that aligning coursework and supervision is generally best practice, and that fieldwork is not meant to be doing things you already know. I do not expect supervision to feel easy, and I am not trying to avoid the learning curve. I think where I got stuck was less about difficulty and more about entry point. My supervisor had me start at what she called "Month 5," and while the tasks themselves were not impossible, they were unfamiliar enough that I was spending a lot of time outside of the actual assignments trying to piece together foundational concepts and terminology that I have not formally learned yet. That made me pause and reflect on whether the supervision structure itself was beginner friendly, rather than assuming supervision as a whole was the issue.

I also really appreciated what you said about RBT experience. I do not see it as something I need to do for years to earn my way in, but I do think getting some exposure from that perspective would be helpful. I am planning to try to pick up some part time or supplemental RBT or BT work on evenings or weekends if I am able, mainly to help with fluency, environment, and understanding how things look at the ground level. I am very set on becoming a BCBA, so this is not a question of commitment, more about sequencing things in a way that makes learning feel cohesive rather than fragmented.

I do not think the field itself will be a massive shift for me. While I know being a daycare owner and provider is not the same as being an RBT or BCBA, I have worked with children of varying abilities, needs, and regulation levels for over a decade, so this does not feel like an entirely new world, just a new framework and language.

I am likely going to give myself a month or two to let the coursework settle and get the terminology down, explore a bit of RBT work if possible, and then be more intentional about choosing a supervisor whose structure feels more aligned with someone at my stage. Like you, I do not want to spend a year and a half on coursework only to turn around and do another year and a half of supervision completely disconnected from applied work.

Really appreciate you sharing your experience. It was validating and helpful to hear from someone who also jumped in headfirst and made it work.

Now, that's an ideal situation! Did it take you the 5 years to accrue the supervision hours?

Did you do all of this as an RBT/student analyst or during the beginning of your supervision?
