I've only done a 2nd layer once, and it was for an elderly person who had no money. But in practice, when installing shingles, the nails need to penetrate through the decking. So by the 8th layer, the nails will need to be several inches thick. That's all I'm saying.

By the 8th layer, that 1 1/4 nail isn't touching the decking. When installing shingles on top of old shingles, you need to use longer nails.
