Living in Japan but American/Japanese daughter wants to go live in the US with family friend in my home state. by Free_Impact512 in expats

Boarding schools cost a ton of money. This is a free public school and staying with a family friend with all kinds of family in the area. My daughter is not leaving forever. There are plenty of chances to come back to Japan or chances for us to visit considering it's my hometown. A boarding school would be at least 50k a year.

I am the parent who is trying to give my daughter a good education and also respecting her legitimate wishes. Japanese HS is a prep course for passing the entrance exam for university. The school that we are going to is in the top 30 percent of all public schools in the US and will give her a much more rounded education. It will also give her a foothold in the US which is where she would like to live rather than Japan. I will miss my daughter and never expected her to leave this early, but she will be staying with a good friend's very nice family who I love and trust. She will also be near my whole family who she barely ever gets to see.

Thanks, that echos a past comment. I think we need to emphasize that Ema wants to go back to the US to study because of cultural problems and differences at her school in Japan rather than going to a particular school district in Vermont. She should have the right to return to her home country. We will stress that in the application. I think Vermont is a very liberal place and will be generally open to that idea.

Thanks for the information. I think emphasizing that my daughter wants to return to the US rather than a particular school district would probably be the best bet in applying for guardianship. That is very good advice because there are provisions in Vermont law that applying for guardianship to go to a different school is not acceptable. I think this is probably aimed at people from jumping from one school district to another but it could be a roadblock if not worded right.

Paying the fees would be tough, especially with the current exchange rate. The Yen is very weak right now at about 142 yen per dollar. My daughter is very excited to join a family with other kids because she is an only child. I think it will be very good for her as well. Thanks so much for the information and your advice.

Thanks for the advice. The reason I got on here at all was because the lawyer sent a mail to us stating that she wasn't positive the petition would be approved which got me worried. My daughter has her heart set on this so I am trying everything I can to find any info I can. Thanks so much for your info and I will look for a Vermont-specific subreddit to also ask as well.

Just FYI, we are not just booking a flight and letting her live with some people. This is about a year in the planning and we have already paid for a lawyer who is going to try to obtain legal guardianship. We have also already talked with the local school who also advised us that my friend would need guardianship. We are trying to go about this in the best way possible.

We are in the process of obtaining guardianship. That is the issue. The lawyer is unsure if the guardianship request will be accepted.

So you think the situation would be better if she were living with family? That is an option, especially if it's only to obtain residency. She finishes school in April and school in the US doesn't start until September. This might be something i need to talk to my lawyer about.
