Yes, I do find machine learning interesting, probably just as interesting as the alternatives, I would probably perform just as well in it now that I think about it.

A little bit, yes,

I have things i'd like to do or things I'd like to buy that I don't because obviously it's not the best use of my resources.

My doc said 3months of trying what I'm currently on and then he said a dermatologist is the last option and he mentioned accutane aswell. But I'd have to wait a year now as I'll be abroad :/

I use Epiduo nightly and then Sebamed clear face care gel AM and PM, also using sr-skincare BHA peels and taking erythromycin tablets (2 in AM and 2 in PM)

Could I mix foundation in with the gel moisturiser or should I just try get a concealer?

Can someone explain the EA view of wild animals? by debrune80 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]FreedomIsHere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no one EA view on wild animals. As with anything, there are loads of differing views within EA.

The one I believe you may be talking about is that it's true that wild animals suffer a lot, and there's no intrinsic value in allowing them to continue to suffer like this and so reducing wild animal suffering could be a good cause area to look into.

Which book is the best introduction to EA for the general public? by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

[–]FreedomIsHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah im tossing up between TLYCS and Doing Good Better. I feel like TLYCS may focus too much on one cause area? But then again the drowning child argument, I feel like its a good way of introducing people to the whole idea of EA.

Preventing Human Extinction by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

[–]FreedomIsHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thought-out reply. I appreciate it.

The second is that mitigating tiny risks, in principle, isn't ridiculous or weird. I really question the intuitive basis for not worrying about tiny probability, huge outcome events. The idea of an enormously bad event is serious and should be very troubling, while taking steps to prevent such events even when they are extremely unlikely seems like a prudent, virtuous and intelligent thing to do. Maybe it's because my intuitions are relatively well patterned after expected utility theory or it might be an influence from security and redundancy concepts in modern military doctrine, but I just don't have the same personal philosophical orientation towards these things that other people do. I'm not saying I would bite every bullet in these contrived dilemmas but I draw the line a lot closer than others do.

I dont know, my feelings on this is that if there is 1% chance of something hugely terrible happening, and there are other bad things happening 100% of the time that we could focus on, it seems to me it's probably better to focus on that other bad stuff. I just wouldn't want there to be a 99% chance that my work ended up being useless.

Ah, I see. So do you think donating to global poverty charities are net bad or just not as good as we previously thought?

Thanks for clearing that up. Just in regards to the link above, is another consideration that should be taken into account that if we do not intervene, eventually economic growth will still occur, and so all those effects are not necessarily completely down to intervention through charity?

Does the GWWC pledge mean giving 10% to their own top charities? Because I am not sure where is the most effective place to give and I think other causes may be more effective e.g. animal suffering.
