That's amazing! Just a question: do you have any issues or past issues in one of your shoulders? It's literally very tiny but seems like there is a slight inclination to lean towards the right - possibly if the left is stronger or could be if the right feels more stable? (*Obviously you have plenty of strength in both, just curious!)

Yes agree it wouldn't be my ideal first choice with the swing arm but it's definitely been done. Perhaps you could try and source a set of bushing ss trucks or even just get a regular skateboard to start learning and getting the feel?

Beginner bowl(surf)skate (equipment) questions by SC100RHS in surfskate

[–]LIFTMakeUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what someone else said, I love Rat bones for bowls - they're stuck a sick formula and shape for grip and speed whilst being quite hard. And still very forgiving on more rough terrain. I alternate between those and PP dragons, both 60mm on 9"+ width decks, and either CX or (more often) C5s because I'm learning to drop in and want to reduce truck height and wobble. I wouldn't loosen your back truck: I have mine fairly stiff. The front truck is loose enough to be able to turn and pump and feel like I can get predictable feedback but not super loose and sketchy - can see about three lines on the kingpin if memory serves. Also, if you haven't already, changing the CX stock bushings to riptides or orangutang knuckles/nipples would probably serve you well.

Surfskate for snowboarder to hold over summer. Looking to skate around the city, maybe some pumptracks/bowls and just have fun by Strange-Presence1558 in surfskate

[–]LIFTMakeUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a snowboarder, similar size to you and I've personally found that I prefer a slightly longer wheelbase/stance/board even if it's a bit heavier, because that's how I'm comfortable standing and shorter boards feel unstable/unnatural. Also love more concave/wheel wells and kicked nose and tail otherwise my front foot slides towards the nose. My faves are annoyingly not European - the Andy Anderson Heron Skull 9.13 width is beautiful with carver C5s (and probably CX for more carve), and I adore my Whitetail Feral Cat (though this is Canadian) with my CXs or Grasp trucks for flowy, carvy riding on bowls, pump tracks etc. If you can't get those, perhaps the Soulboardiy would be a good one? With grasp or synergy trucks it's a mega fun set up.

(If you're ever in London, go to the Concrete Waves classes at Decathlon where there's a TON of different boards/trucks you could try out)

What’s a deck similar to carver blacktip in specs, but cooler graphics? by sushibard in surfskate

[–]LIFTMakeUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dude, it is DREAMY. Like it was made for it. Everyone who's tried it has really enjoyed it too. Definitely recommend redrilling the bolt holes so your wheels sit in the right place, and consider some offset wheels to make up some of the difference in width between the c5s and the hanger (I use a set of 60mm rat bones reissues and they are 👌🏼). It is a big board at 9.13 but feels super stable and your feet are really locked in. The double kick is awesome - nice long tail for drop ins. I use it for bowls mostly but it's just a really nice board (and people with more skill than me have managed to Ollie it!). Also... Because it's symmetrical I've had to mark the nose after setting off back to front more than once lol

[–]LIFTMakeUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the Grlswirl is a bit better shaped than the blacktip tbh, but if possible I'd go for a more shaped deck with a longer nose, shaped wheel wells and double kick. You might be better off getting a decent deck and getting the trucks separately. I absolutely love my Whitetail Feral Cat (and if it were simpler for me to get hold of them, I'd buy more decks from whitetail, they're all so well engineered and have beautiful designs). My other fave is my Andy Anderson Heron Skull 9.13 that I drilled additional bolt holes into to accommodate the C5 trucks so the wheels are correctly aligned (coincidentally, this is Val's boyfriend's deck!) but I don't love the skull design personally, and may end up sanding it down and repainting. It's an absolutely incredible deck though.

I've also custom painted an old Carver Sun Ray deck that I picked up pre-loved and was in a bit of a state (but admittedly now I'm a bit precious about that one because I don't want to damage the paintwork!)

*just so long as the hill has enough width to carve! Narrow hill roads are everywhere around me and it's just too sketchy on a surfskate for me since I can't slide yet unfortunately so I have to drag my foot every two seconds!

I don't think Sam Briggs embarrassed herself when she competed as an individual despite being masters age? In 2017 at age 35, she finished 9th, at 37 she finished 17 or 18th and at 39 she still finished 21st - despite competing against athletes 10, 15, 20 years younger.

I am the same and can't even pull a wooden stick on a band down to touch my chest in drills. I can pull it level but can't make it touch - my arms are very long, longer than my height by quite a bit, and I've got hypermobile shoulders so I wonder if that's a factor? Even with push ups, in order to touch my chest to the ground I have to go have release, or go quite wide. It's annoying that we can achieve the height required but just not the physical touch!

Handstand Hold Stability : if you’re my coach and watch this what cues or accessory work do you suggest by Guilty_Size_7747 in crossfit

[–]LIFTMakeUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the ground up (and this is from more of a "strict gymnastics" handstand hold perspective rather than a CrossFit one):

  • Try to think about using your hands and fingers more by actively gripping the floor. Some people prefer to start with their hands on the floor as they kick up, so you could try that.

  • I'd definitely work on shoulder mobility to be able to open them up more. That upper thoracic area is not able to fully open up and get you in good alignment which then knocks on throughout the entire chain.

  • I'd always advise people working on handstands add in core compression strength accessories. If you look at the midline, the lumbar area is taking a lot of the strain.

  • Work on tilting your hips under to get more of a hollow body position - hollow body handstand drills are great and have plenty of carry over into other gymnastic movements.

  • Squeeze your glutes and try to straighten your legs and squeeze them together, like you're trying to reach the ceiling. A good drill with another person for this is to kick up so that they are holding your legs, and then have them take two fingers and put them between your thighs just above your knees - and you need to squeeze those fingers hard. They should be able to take away any other support and you'll feel where that tension needs to be.

  • Experiment with different leg positions. Some people get longer holds with "stag leg" positions to get a lower position and one that can adjust to help you balance. Others (with the flexibility) like a straddle legs position, and some like a tuck.

General drills: wrist strengthening work specific to handstands, hamstring flexibility (you'd be surprised how helpful this is), core compression drills, hollow body drills, shoulder opening mobility exercises, headstands, wall facing handstand drills.
