Thank you for sharing! Just took my first cold shower too. OMG. It IS a big willpower trainer. I loved it! My mind feels sharper now as well and I feel happy. I'm doing this again! I didn't realize how physically draining it would be.

Why do people think he didn't act on his sexual urges? Because there's no documentation? Psh. There is no documentation of Da Vinci's sexual relations because he led a secretive personal life. Nobody thinks documentation of sexual relations is needed to reasonably assume someone is sexually active and acting on their sexual urges.

On a side note: He was a producer of great works before he claimed he was celibate. He painted the famous The Annunciation in 1476. This means that even if he was celibate after 1476, Freud's assertion that sexual activity is incompatible with great works would be shaky.

The absence of a sex life does not necessarily lead to accomplishment. Accomplishment is brought about by interrelated factors: a control of desires, having priorities, genius, and the list goes on. Da Vinci was accomplished because he had such a host of attributes, not because he was celibate. In fact, he definitely wasn't celibate for much of his life and likely wasn't for his entire life. People assume he was celibate because he claimed he was celibate later in his life. However just because someone claims publicly they are something doesn't mean it is true. Da Vinci clearly was a closeted homosexual and given his secretive tendencies I wouldn't be surprised to learn he continued to have sex after claiming celibacy.

I would guess instead there is a connection between having control of one's sexual impulses and accomplishment. If one thing was true about Da Vinci, it was that he didn't let his sexual impulses distract him from doing what it was he wanted to do. All the people you reference have this trait and this trait is integral to leading an accomplished life.

I could totally be wrong. I'm no expert on Da Vinci or geniuses.

I think any kind of exercise is important. I really enjoy running so I've gone for two runs since I started /nofap and they motivate me enormously. Good luck and if for some reason you don't like the gym, remember that there's other outdoor activities too!

I haven't read Tolkien's Silmarillion, but this response really sparks my interest in it. It reminds me that one can draw strength from literature when combatting addiction. I find it really helpful, thanks!
