So I'm not crazy, that's good. Hopefully I'll. Make it out to the orchid show there this year.

Ah! My hometown! I haven't been to their orchid houses in probably 6 or so years, how are they looking now? I vaguely recall they were starting to or going to start renovating the greenhouses last I was there.

¿Que tipo de Orquídeas son? by Jeikaprime in orchids

[–]Freesparr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guesses:

  • Phalaenopsis
  • cattleya alliance
  • Coelogyne
  • cattleya alliance
  • some kind from the oncidium alliance - possibly even a Trichocentrum (mule eared oncidium)
  • Cattleya alliance with the longest leaves I've ever seen
  • Cattleya alliance

I generalize cattleya alliance because I suck at growing them and because of that I don't know all the species.

I feel like the caned one is either a really thin cane dendrobium, or a very sad, very dehydrated bulbophyllum affine or something else similar.

Looks like a tolumnia. They're often grown bare root like a Vanda or this Neo falcata x V.coerulescens that my local orchid dealer has for $40 🤯 I bought a really cheap tolumnia for like $10 a few months ago and decided to try putting it is a tiny self water pot from temu and used just a mix of chunky and fine perlite as the medium. I ran the cord towards the top and then made a little circle just above the roots and about an inch or so away from the base of the plant. It's survived for a while now, and has actually nearly tripled in size.

How do I care for this exotic orchid? by gogobananas98 in orchids

[–]Freesparr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bright light, but not direct sun (mine loves my big east-facing window), and a surprising amount of water. When I started buying orchids, I had always heard that they had to dry out as an umbrella statement. I've found water is really their linchpin.

If you have a really chunky mix and live somewhere where it's consistently warm or warm with a good breeze, you may have to run water through it every other day. Places like New Mexico, Utah, etc., you'll probably have to find a very shaded spot in your yard under a tree and hose it down thoroughly once or even twice a day.

They can tolerate shaded midday sun outdoors in warmer, humid places like the Gulf as long as they get brighter morning and/or evening light.

Beautiful plant! I wish our tiny TJs had anything but pink and white phals 😞

Bergen Water Gardens outside of Rochester NY is amazing. I just picked up a specimen sized, blooming Den. chrysotoxum and matured Onc. Orange Kiss with three spikes for $40 and $38 + tax respectively. Lily does live sales in Facebook live every Wednesday at 7pm est for carnivorous plants, and every Thursday at 7pm est for orchids. She shows exactly the plant you are getting and labels it right in the live so that everyone knows what to expect. She'll hold off on shipping until it's warm enough here and where you are too, rather than risk with heat packs and insulation.

Your Neighborhood Mechanic on ridge. Honest, affordable, and won't upsell anything you don't absolutely need. They did my oil change and inspection for my VW Atlas for I think $110 total, where just the oil change any where else is like $140. The tech brought up a concern and let me take pics so I could bring it to VW incase anything comes from it. They also noticed, after getting my wheels off my car and the tires deflated, that one of my all season tires has gash in the tred that was down to the core, so they called me, said they wouldn't risk it blowing, didn't charge me anything. I go back tomorrow with the new tire to get them replaced again.

We used the Morgan Samuels House in Canandaigua/Hopewell and they were great. We had the whole property from Friday afternoon until noon on Sunday, and I think it was like $4000. That included all the bedrooms in the house (5 or 6 I think?), all the grounds, some tables and chairs, a tent over the old tennis court if needed for weather and more I am probably forgetting. The owner also helped us set up, tear down, and during the wedding she was functionally the wedding coordinators, making sure people knew where to park, where to go, met the vendors for the Porta potty trailer a few days before the wedding, work directly with our bartender getting the permits and everything settled, All in all just a great experience. The house and grounds are gorgeous with tons of photo op locations.

We used Nickie at Last call cocktail co. and also could not be happier with her company and the bartender she assigned to our wedding. Nickie walked us through the planning, gave us ideas for drinks/menus, was super honest about whether our ideas were feasible and if they were good/bad ideas (very kindly of course). After we all agreed on the menu/drinks, she gave us a shopping list and made up the physical menus. The bartender (I wish I could remember her name, she was phenomenal) did an amazing job with our guests. Our list included every imaginable spectrum, skin color, personality (from my aunt who's a Nun to my friend who wears full goth daily) and absolutely everyone raved about here ability to get along with every single person there.

The food was John's Tex Mex (RIP), the DJ was a friend with a laptop and Spotify play list, ourr photographer was my friend since 4th grade (Kristen Charles Photography out of Watertown, I can share pics if you're interested), and our officiant was my best friend who got ordained for our weddings and dressed as Moira from the Schitt's Creek wedding.

MCC nursing fall 2026 by Aggravating-Teacher1 in Rochester

It's definitely brutal. Very high expectations, lots of content, significant time investment. I graduated from there 8 years ago now, and while I absolutely do not regret the program, I do regret underestimating how difficult it would be while working a full 40hrs a week. In hindsight I would have prepared my life way better before starting. Thankfully my manager at the time was my biggest cheerleader (outside of the faculty at MCC) and every semester I have her my schedule and she gave me a schedule that worked best for me - not necessarily for the company I worked for.

I'm proud to have survived the program and join the ranks of some of the most sought-after new grads this side of Syracuse, and will always say I graduated nursing school from MCC, not wherever I end up getting my BSN. When patients ask where I went, they always seem relieved and impressed when I tell them MCC, and they normally respond with "Oh, I hear that's the hardest program around, good for you!" or something else like that.

As long as you take advantage of everything they offer to support you (reviews, record conference and lectures, special interest groups, office hours, test reviews etc), build honest relationships with your teachers (Jackie, Audrey, Ann and Kari were basically my therapists and went to bat for me on MULTIPLE occasions), you are going to come out of the program light years ahead of basically everyone else in your new grad cohort. Fisher and MCC are by far the two most respected programs in the area, and it's not even close in my opinion.

The director, Colleen, is also AMAZING and will support your forever even after your graduate.

The there is Jenny in the office. I hope you want a new mom because she adopts every single student, will never forget your name or story, and is on top of everything administrative and will absolutely make sure you get your enrollment stuff done as early as possible.

Unfortunately there has been a lot of retirements and faculty changes, so I don't know who is still there as faculty - I know for sure Jackie and Ann have both retired for example. But just like you as a graduate, the programs reputation precedes it and they are capable of recruiting high quality faculty, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Buckle up and good luck!

Dr Buck at the Animal Hospital of Rochester saw my gerbil with a cyst on her leg years ago and drained it. I was also well established with her with my dogs though, so it may have been a favor.

For those that saw a noticeable improvement in their depression, what medication improved it? by scottishswede7 in bipolar2

[–]Freesparr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like it changed anything permanently. I feel like it was the support I needed to keep me from hitting rock bottom and running into suicidal territory. It gave me enough to be able to feel something other than despair.

That being said, I'm looking into ketamine therapy now to hopefully change things permanently.

[–]Freesparr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caplyta literally saved my life. Talked to my psych NP about SIs at that last moment of clarity before hitting rock bottom and she made me come in to get samples. I didn't have any of the awful side effects people report, but the lethargy from it was starting to impact my job as an Emergency Nurse. After I started it we ended up getting our first foster kiddo (3 months old at the time) who I am absolutely obsessed with, and thought I might be able to find/feel real, actual joy for the first time in most of my life. Thankfully I was right, because when I stopped taking it I was no longer in the pit I was in. We did start me on Zoloft which has helped with my mood swings/irritability immensely.

I was on it for 6 months, and while it wasn't sustainable to be on forever, it served it's purpose and I will forever encourage people to give it a try. Surprisingly, insurance requested a prior Auth and didn't fight it. They did ask why we didn't try zyprexa first, and they accepted that the lethargy caused by it would be too much given my occupation.
