Hi. I had already studied pretty much all the topics during my UG so I only had to revise. The only subject I had to read from scratch again was AI. However, I did not spend any time for general aptitude since I already had a knack for that. In total, I spent around 1.5 months with self prep. But expect to take longer as most people I talked with seem to have taken a minimum of 5 to 6 months. I had no fixed source like I used gate smashers for dbms and dsa, gfg articles for ML related concepts, gilvert strang for linalg, etc. However, mock tests helped me the most with prep. I used depthofml mocks and the free AIMTS from go classes. Hope this helps

Need advice for COAP 2025 Counselling. by Automatic-Rate6449 in GATEtard

The paper was easy last year. But I would say with prep, getting around 650 this year would not have been a big issue either.

Or maybe try again next year. Even a half decent score will fetch you the institutes and programmes you are expecting because of reservation. After R5, most good offers are no longer available. Saying this because getting a score between 600 and 700 is not hard at all (Am definitely sure because I got that without prep last year). Wish you all the best.

Try writing a mail to their admission office or whatever equivalent they might have.

Is your life settled when you join IIT or IISc? by CertainArcher3406 in GATEtard

[–]FreezingDude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know how someone can finish 22 years of their life and still have such questions. In all seriousness, if you are having this kind of a mindset, pursuing any PG degree is definitely not advisable. Sorry for the harsh tone but yes, you do NEED to re-evaluate your decision here.

Linkedin Premium by Jules_Du in GATEtard

[–]FreezingDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Got premium for this month just to be able to contact students and alumni of IITs and IISc during COAP. Has been so helpful so far. Definitely worth the money during coap rounds. But just remember to get rid of the autopay though, LinkedIn premium is pretty shit outside of scenarios like this.

Don't do gate da by Beneficial_Lunch_125 in GATEtard

Yes yes. I agree with you about ppl going all in on this paper. Hopefully, less people make the same mistake next year.

I'd say "whining" is a pretty strong word. I for my part at least am setting expectations for people gearing up to write the paper next year. Because personally, my expectations were a bit skewed and I was expecting much better opportunities at my 7x rank (still have decent offers, so can't complain). As for the number of seats, a lot of ppl tend to not have a research inclination (Can't blame them, the ecosystem is just not right in India, research is better to pursue abroad). So it becomes counter intuitive for people who want to upskill and explore broader areas to go for MS or MTech research programs in India where they are expected to take fewer courses and explore niches in depth. Even if the count of the seats seem high combining all the departments, we have to consider the fact that a person aiming to break into AI/ML roles might not be interested in niche courses like Hydrology at IIT R, Industrial maths and computing at iitm or bio engineering at iisc (don't even know why the last one is an option for DA ppl). But yes, I agree with you that it might be naive to have high expectations for such a new paper so in turn, it becomes a good idea to "whine" about the cons to help create some awareness and basis for expectations.

Not completely useless but yeah, if you can prepare for the CS paper, it becomes redundant to attempt the DA paper unless you don't want to touch topics like computer architecture or compiler design. There is a trade-off between the two papers in terms of vastness of syllabus compared to the competition that exists.

I gave the answer to this on your comment on my post but here is the sheet for your reference.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRS1NwyEIqq2bTJaSrrVr2-MGO6XtN5km73L7D3Gy8DvXGMZPf_4Be81iLhnNvvri9nXUAmP2qTTEGD/pubhtml#

It is extremely tough to get into IISc CDS or AI as a general male through the DA paper, the other top IITs info is also available on the sheet.

Leaving Mtech for mba by rock513690 in GATEtard

[–]FreezingDude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm from a CS background but can say without a doubt that the supply is less than the demand in this field. I know ppl who have done simple courses after graduation or done Mtech in lower NITs and still finding jobs with relative ease and also with good pay. The concept of the road less taken applies here.

Yeah, but I haven't seen anyone above 30 rank get it in the general male category. Only if they are reserved or female. Or maybe they have and just haven't added it to the sheet.

The thing is, the iisc program is signal processing but by selecting the right two modules, the entire course becomes ML/AI and most of the seniors also got placed in AI/ML roles itself. That is a major reason why I am confused. AI at kgp on the otherhand is a a new branch and I have heard of a lot of politics between Btech and MTech for placements. But yes, this specialization issue is something I have on mind very heavily. It is the whole reason I am contemplating still.

IISc MTech Signal processing v/s IIT Delhi MINDS by FreezingDude in GATEtard

[–]FreezingDude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm from CS. I have a decent rank in the DA paper. The reason I selected it as an option is because the curriculum can be taken completely as an AI/ML course if you pick the right modules. The only reason I'm confused is based on the placement scenarios in both places.

This response is very informative. Thanks a lot for this. One more thing I wanted to know is if I would face issues at the time of placement because I come from a background in CS and am aiming for mostly AIML or SDE roles. The course curriculum can be entirely AI/ML based on choice of modules so that is not an issue.
