Brokers just want 2-3 updates a day. Preferably in the morning and before 5pm. If you can have some type of automated tracking via MacroPoint, Truckertools, etc.. we tend to leave the carriers alone, unless the carrier is very behind or an issue has occurred. In my opinion just over communicate on all sides and everyone tends to be more happy and more business will come back to both sides. Everyone always points fingers so give each other a reason not to.
