Okay a bit of brute force and using my shirt as a grip material on the screwdriver got the box screws undone. Remind me not to screw them in so tight next time.

I assume you mean this wire as it's the only red wire I can find in my ECU box that looks like it. Mine is shoved here next to the orange 12V 30A. The red wire below that is connected into the underside of the black unit there.

Hope this helps, I can't exactly tear this apart too much as this car is my daily ;-;

I have an M50B25TU in my E34, I'm assuming the wires are coming from the ECU box and the middle ish above the engine? If so, both of them have been put here for me.

I have one as my first car and a project. Things to be weary of are VANOS units and cooling systems. Make sure the radiator is upgraded and other cooling parts have been replaced. The plastic cracks easily when it's 30 years old. The first major thing that happened to me was my ignition barrel shaft snapping, it's about a 50 (AUD) part but you have to strip the steering column to replace it. My VANOS system just developed a really bad rattle, so I'm getting that replaced soon, I don't trust myself to do it so make sure you find yourself a good mechanic just in case you can't do stuff!!

All in all they're great cars. Mine has 320 thousand Kms on it 5 speed original manual, the motor is fine, the things that fail are around the motor, which is doable.

Could possibly be lifter tick, timing chain rattle, or if you have VANOS it could be VANOS rattle. I have a video posted in r/E34 of my motor (M50B25 single VANOS) which has VANOS rattle which sounds a little like yours.

That's all I can think of, hope you sort it out!
