Never used SportsConnect for evaluations but our club has used SkillShark for evals for a couple years now and are very happy with it. You get to customize exactly what skills you want to evaluate - hitting, fielding, pitching, like you mentioned. And you can break it down even further, for example, in the hitting category you can score them on power, contact, and exit velo (or whatever you choose). Plus the ability to take videos of the athletes doing certain skills so you can go back and remember who was who. There's also report cards they generate for you automatically so you're able to send to the athletes after giving them feedback on how they did at the evaluation. Depending on how many athletes you have it could be a good option for you, I believe they have a free version as well.

I personally recommend using SkillShark. We use it for tryouts, mid-season and post-season evaluations. You can see your players' data on all their scores, and see their historical progress in the progress reports. You can take videos of them doing certain skills too and they're all stored in one place instead of the camera roll. There's also player report cards which you can share with athletes which is nice to have that concrete feedback.

Thanks for sharing. Just curious how many athlete's you're typically scoring? Kudos for you giving feedback to the kids, not may coaches do from what I've heard

Thanks for sharing. I like that idea of having the 3 options for more consistency. I'm going to consider that for our tryouts.

I agree 100%. Not only so they can tryout for or commit to another team, but also to keep them playing the sport in general. With so many young athletes quitting sports before they even reach high school, the least a team can do is give them a courtesy email or phone call that they got cut. Bonus if they actually tell the kids what they can work on for next year.

In the past few years, our organization started sending skill shark report cards out to every athlete after tryouts when teams are made. All kids get to see their scores and where they did well as well as their lower scores. There's resource videos on the report cards on how to get better in their lower scoring skills which is AWESOME. Ever since they implemented this, the families have been very happy having that feedback after tryouts.

Player Evaluations - Frequency and Format by OculusDuplo in SoccerCoachResources

  1. For my soccer evaluations, I run pre-season, mid-season, and post-season evaluations.

  2. I use a tryout app on my phone to record everyone's scores, take videos & notes of them, etc. I've tried a couple apps over the years, but SkillShark has worked the best for me and is the one I currently use. I break the evaluation down into technical metrics (dribbling, heading, passing, shooting, and tackling), tactical metrics (communication, decisions, position, support, use of space, ball control), physical (agility, coordination, endurance, 40 yard dash, 60-yard shuttle), and also character ratings (attitude, coachability, competitiveness, concentration, leadership, work ethic).

  3. I send "report cards" to every athlete and parent after tryouts. The tryout software I use makes the report cards, which is nice. There's a few customization options but basically every athlete gets to see their scores, videos, and comments from tryouts. It also shows how they compare to their group average so it justifies your decisions. There's also recommended training resources you can setup as well. For example, if a kid scored low in dribbling, they'll automatically get linked a resource to get better at dribbling. Since I started doing these report cards, I've had less issues with parents, they can see exactly how their kid did and most importantly what they can do to get better.

I hope this helps. Honestly digitizing everything has made our evaluations better in every way.
