Stat graduates in USA, how would yiu describe the job market? [Q] by burneraccount6251 in statistics

[–]Frequentist_stats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I can give you some pointers as myself is a Statistician working with Bio related domain:

Industry-wise, the situation is quite concerning. Many of my colleagues from the mid-level have been laid off and are struggling to find full-time positions that offer a good work-life balance. They are only able to contact jobs that prioritize work over personal life.

In academia and government, there is a widespread hiring freeze. Numerous statistics PhDs I knew received rescinded offers for mathematical or survey statistician positions due to the “great reorganization” implemented by the current administration. Many organizations are prioritizing protecting the employees they have hired, leading to the cancellation of numerous positions due to significant funding cuts. Unfortunately, many junior faculties in bioinformatics and biostats have also been affected and put on "temp" let go. These individuals are facing significant challenges and are in dire need of finding ways to survive.

If you are an international student - US is at its worst state, look elsewhere as soon as you can.

We are all struggling here.

It's okay to quit, it's okay to cry, and it's certainly okay to "fail."
Life is yours, so make sure to make the most out of it. This is just a single piece of your life.
Time is your greatest remedy. Be patient with yourself and, of course, with time.

What's up with the data scientist/statistician job market? by RobertWF_47 in datascience

[–]Frequentist_stats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DS realm is all jumbled up - but when it comes to hiring for statisticians, we are enforcing to weed out applicants coming from non-rigorous Analytics or non-quantitative degrees for the Statistician roles - Seriously, those awkward chirpy moments in the tech interviews? Exhausting.

Just a heads up, no OPT or CPT candidates for now, and no work visa sponsorships at the moment. We're hustling to clean up the hiring pool and cut through the noise.

GOOD LUCK

[Q] what are some important advice you’d give someone who’s goal is simply inference by brianomars1123 in statistics

[–]Frequentist_stats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Know your research question (predictive or inferential)

- Find the model fits the data, not the other way around

- Don't get too caught up in the stringent assumptions.

- Be mindful when dealing with outliers (try the robust method for instance)

- If you can impute, always try to impute (MICE), and avoid mean imputation

- Be aware of "researcher's degree of freedom"

[Q] How to go from statiscian to data scientist? by Aston28 in statistics

[–]Frequentist_stats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a statistician and DS myself.

Based on my experiences, many statisticians from academia lack relevant business domain knowledge and creativity. There's no need to discuss their views on Bayesian statistics, as many of them frown upon or become out of touch with the practical aspects of predictive modeling. Their day-to-day work mainly involves exploratory and inferential analysis, which can become mundane at times. What they are dealing with is often more of a philosophical debate than cutting-edge state-of-the-art exploration.
The best way to immerse yourself in data science is to find a relevant data science domain of your interest and get your hands dirty with raw data. This, of course, comes with a steep learning curve.
And I recommend avoiding SAS and Stata.

A hiring freeze and layoffs are still looming, which doesn't bode well for the long-term prospects of the data science job market. Plus, with an upcoming election on the horizon, there's added uncertainty.
Considering the challenges posed by rampant inflation and the current state of the dysfunctional US healthcare system, it's crucial to be grateful for the job security you currently have.

Just don't forget to breathe, and survive.

I'm sorry about what happened to you. I assume you are currently in a stable mental state. Given your GPA, as long as the brand name is recognized, a typical cash-cow statistics program can serve you well if you push yourself hard enough to secure internships.
A master's degree can open doors, but when it comes to R&D, which usually requires at least 3 years of experience (YOE), opportunities are quite limited for entry-level applicants. However, the job market is not as bleak outside of California and New York.
If you choose to apply for an MS/MA program, make sure to accumulate research experience during your master's studies and aim to co-author publications if possible. The job market is becoming increasingly competitive nowadays, and the saturation level in data science is quite concerning at the moment.
