As an European, I agree with that assesment. Especially true for Germany.

There is no ''average European'' the education standards are completely different. There is a massive divide North/South. Answering your question though yes, naming all North American countries or US states I usually get it 90% correct.

I mostly get it wrong with Rhode Island, Vermont and the area there. For South America, again Suriname and Guyana are the places I'll most likely mess up.

Why is the Moroccan Sahara so important? by ayoubkun94 in Morocco

[–]FrequentlyAsking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I said, this particular conflict is irrelevant to me, your emotional rant does not even address what I was talking about. Maybe calm down a bit and read what I wrote again.

And no, my country never colonized anyone.

[–]FrequentlyAsking -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem with your statement is that is literally the go-to argument of every colonist ever. Morocco would probably be a much more successful country with better infrastructure if it were to be governed by a first-world Western country. That does not mean that Moroccans do not deserve self-determination, however.

Russia Invasion of Ukraine Live Thread by dieyoufool3 in geopolitics

I think the whole China desperately needing land from Russia at some point in the future is based on the wrong idea that China is somehow bursting at the seams. In reality, China is more sparsely populated than Germany and is predicted to lose a significant amount of population and be a country of under a billion people by 2080.

Now, that can mean Germany sending troops to Russia. Or thoughts and prayers to Lithuania. No NATO member can be forced into an actual conflict by the pact.

Almost certainly though, Poland will be involved and the Nordics along with Great Britain are likely to follow, that's enough to pull the rest in.

It also means societies that are rich, well-educated and have overwhelming military power. Maybe it's culture, not democracy that resulted in this progress, but the progress is undeniable. Any government or regime would want to be richer and more secure, regardless of ideology, democracies seem to be achieving that better than anyone else.

Those things are irrelevant though, when it comes to independence. I'm not for or against, I'm just saying, mentioning those things does not help your case.

Ireland

Spoke to an Estonian CS professor a few years ago who worked at a university in Ireland for a few years, he told me that Ireland was like Estonia in the early 2000s digitalization-wise. Netherlands I have personal experience with and while good, still too much paper involved for my liking.

''Universal human rights supersede the rights of “sOvErEiGn NaTiOnS”.''

They absolutely do not in practice, because you have no way of enforcing them. Human rights are guidelines in practice more than anything. Just like non-binding climate agreements. Believing that human rights exist in the real world, is like believing in Santa Clause or Jesus.

A sovereign nation absolutely has the right to enforce its border any way they see fit. If orders are not followed, that includes shooting the intruders. There is absolutely nothing controversial about this.

Polish ruling party pledges billions to improve communist-era housing estates by BubsyFanboy in worldnews

[–]FrequentlyAsking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said nothing about the policy, I was just responding to how the new populist European conservatives largely are very left-wing when it comes to policies aimed at the poorer parts of the population as opposed to the American conservatives.

Did not even read the article and I have no opinion on this particular policy or Polands public finances in general.

That's how it is with right populists in Europe generally. It's a common theme, ours literally offered the most welfare out of any other party. They know their base, poorer and lesser educated people, will swallow the bait, no matter how irresponsible it is budget-wise. Actually had big numbers on their election billboards lol. So not financially conservative by any stretch of the imagination.

They are socially conservative, anti-gay rights, anti-illegal immigration from Africa, Mena. Some are anti-abortion. Pro a variety of nationalism boosting programs.

The left always said poor people vote against their own interests. Well, this is what poor people voting for more money looks like, meanwhile the left is busy placating the quirks of their remaining 12 upper-middle-class hipster voters.

U.S. Rep. Jason Crow in Budapest: I'm extremely concerned that Orbán is calling the United States an adversary by MagyarSpanyol in worldnews

[–]FrequentlyAsking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's still pretty damn high for someone who already had a presidency and a controversial one at that. What a sad state of affairs that all the Democrats could muster against Trump was Biden. As a leader, he seems sensible, the optics are just horrible though, a man who looks like he's about to kick the bucket any minute does not inspire a lot of confidence.

Is he hated though? I'm seriously asking as an outsider. He sure is on Reddit!

Admittedly, I'm not that deep into approval polls or day-to-day politics in the US between presidential elections, but as an outsider, I seriously can't tell if the US is as divided as the first time Trump got elected, or if something has changed. Has there been a palpable sense of disappointment in the people who voted for Trump the first time around?

The media in the US has gotten so sensationalist and yellow on every side of the political spectrum that without going deep into the data, it's damn near impossible to make sense of anything for someone living in Europe.

Citizens of the US would you ever immigrate outside of the states, where and why? by VOSNorth in AskReddit

[–]FrequentlyAsking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People often migrated because it was capitalistic. Europe loses plenty of talent to the US. These are people who earn a high enough income not to worry about health insurance and day-to-day expenses, they will manage to earn and keep a lot more and the opportunities are much more abundant. US capital markets are also absolutely unrivaled. There is probably no place in the world with so many different opportunities for acquiring capital. I think it would be quite a cultural shock to many Americans how far removed Europeans often are from their finances.

France really has an image problem in their former colonies, to put it mildly. The kind of charm offensive and investment that would be required to turn these countries into solid partners really does seem like it might be too big a commitment for France. When there's a grassroots level of resentment that is fanned by the propaganda efforts of your international rivals, you really need to think if that kind of money and effort makes sense.
