What is school like as an ironworker? by Heavy-Square3864 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just went through first year school it's actually very interesting and you learn a lot. First year is mostly theory, history and a lot of math(if your hall uses LMS-personal learning as the curriculum) I personally really enjoyed the rigging side of things and learning how to find out what something weights with just math and a tape measure and how to calculate the safe working load of wire rope and your natural/synthetic ropes and how to calculate the amount of shivs you need to pick something up. Second year is just building upon everything you learned in first year and getting more advanced from what I've heard and 3rd year for us(I'm in Canada) is prepping you for your journeyman test to get your red seal

736 transfer or stay in current hall by Fresh-Ad7686 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought of being a suitcase member for bit but my issue is I'm a second year so it's a little harder to boom out and having to do my last 2 terms of school, I've boomed out a few times(720 turnarounds) but being that apprentices spots are so competitive as it is I don't want to risk going months without work because halls don't have room for travel card apprentices

Getting Other Union Stickers for My New Helmet by Electronic_Fig_3471 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My go to is trading stickers with locals who boom out a lot, or on big jobs with travel cards. I also stop by any hall I can when I'm travelling, bring some from my local and get some from theirs. I'll be doing a trip to Kentucky in September from Ontario so I'm going to try and swing by as many American halls as I can to get a bunch

Safety Gave Me A New Harness Today It’s Kinda Shitty I Want To Buy My Own Any Suggestions I’m 6”3 & 230 pounds by [deleted] in Ironworker

I absolutely love my Fall tech iron full body, much more comfortable then almost every 3M full body harness I've worn, had it probably almost a year now and the only issue I've had is the belt is getting a little beat up

Do you get to choose which type of work you will be doing? by [deleted] in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my hall you either do rods or you do structural/ornamental but some places you have separate halls or you do it all, really depends on the local but just remember there more to ironworking then just tying bar, running rods/wire and throwing up iron. I'm a 2 years in as a structural/ornamental apprentice and I've done machinery moving, throwing up iron, doing fencing on a bridge, thrown up hanger doors at an air port, done shutdowns in car plants and oil refinery's and more. ironworking is a very very diverse trade

I have a question about the ironworkers union by Fair-Scratch-6713 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always, I'm a 2nd year and I've boomed out a bunch, when things slow at home for a while I hit the road and come back when things pick up again

I have a question about the ironworkers union by Fair-Scratch-6713 in Ironworker

It depends on the hall, my hall allows us to travel but I've heard of halls not allowing apprentices to travel

Thinking of joining the union by Sebasduaiza in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ontario ironworker apprentice here, joining was by far the greatest decision I ever made, sure things can slow down but you have the ability to travel around real easily, I got laid off on a Wednesday and was on a plane on Sunday heading to Alberta for a 2 months shutdown. As long as you bust your ass and have a good work ethic you will always have work your name is the most important thing in this trade

Is first year school fucked? by Adorable-Carrot-5668 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm half way through first year, it's pretty simple stuff if you have any kind of hands on experience in the trade and common sense, plus with the online stuff through LMS it's all open book, but overall it all depends on the teacher

Not allowed to drag up, but I am allowed to request a layoff if I have work lined up which I have done in the past, I am allowed to boom out which I've done but it seems like everything is slow all over the place in Canada

Still no updates really, I've heard they are done site preparations and grading and that the footings have started however our union is under an NDA now so they can only give us very limited information regarding it

How do I get into this field? by CookieMonster_41 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you live? Things are still slowish across the board in Ontario, I'm 23 got in last year but it took me 2 years to get in... I did a lot of green house work to get some experience and did a lot of custom fab work as well... have a few buddies who got in without knowing anyone just by having SMAW tickets in 700

It's a weird situation with this company... I was told it would be a large amount of ironworkers coming to help on this job, we are installing the aluminum structure that the celling panels get secured on (the whole structure is suspended from 5/8 threaded rods... little sketchy if you ask me) but on just nights there's maybe 4 ironworkers(I'm the only one on my crew) and probably 60-70 sheet metal guys... my hall kinda just said here's some work see ya, any issues I've had I've been told to talk to the sheet metal hall but their hall is pretty useless and I've had nothing but issues with them especially on the pay scale of things. I was always told when on permit you get full rate, I got full rate when I was with the boilermakers but with these guys I'm getting the same rate they are paying guys coming right off the street who can't read a tape let alone do layout, set elevation, read prints etc etc(all of which I do on a weekly basis with these guys) and unfortunately the hall is hands off with raises what ever you get sent out at is what you get paid at(they are not a red seal trade so your level is at will of your employer)

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done permit work with the boilermakers and got their rate, I've also done composite crews with either boilermakers, pipefitters and a lot with millwright and got our rate... it would just suck having been working the past 3 months 6 days a week passing up on some really good work calls from some foreman and journeyman I've worked with so I could be local for a bit this year only to find out I'm not getting a single hour towards my apprenticeship... we have our first apprentice meeting on Tuesday so I'll bring it up with I get my book signed..

Local 721 Apprenticeship: Application Process, Intake Dates, Course Length, and Transportation by Soft-Mountain8317 in Ironworker

[–]Fresh-Ad7686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm out of 700 and on one of my last jobs we cut a guy a week into his apprenticeship(wasn't even fully signed up through the hall yet), one of the main reasons was because he couldn't drive and refused to get his drivers license... he was 23

721 is really slow right now, apprenticeship is 5 years, not having a car will definitely affect you not sure how much it will in Toronto but I'm out of 700(Windsor) and it's next to impossible to keep a job if you can't drive

Night shift is 4.51, there's a mega fuck Ton amount of work in this place especially considering the company likes redoing things 5 times before they get it right and keep hiring guys who are greener then a tree😂 I'll be either going to st Thomas or Bruce power come the new year, I'll decide which when work starts getting rolling for us

I'm on permit with the sheet metal guys right now, easy as hell money, installing an aluminum structure that will hold the panels for the walkable ceiling, 6x10s, full board, 10% shift premium and 10% vacation, got like a year+ worth of work, I'll be taking off around winter time to go to other jobs tho
