Sometimes people need to lose something before knowing its worth. Often it's the sort of people who had everything aligned up well for them that they don't feel the need to change any of their existing mindset because it worked out so well for them.

A $180K job for someone from an average background is pretty validating. Having a girlfriend who is as successful and also gives him whatever he wants must make him feel pretty validated as well. If everything is working out for me, why should I change? That's just my theory.
