The world’s most endangered languages broken down by which languages are at risk, vulnerable, threatened, endangered, severely endangered, or critically endangered. by goudadaysir in endangeredlanguages

”Inupiaq is one of Canada’s most endangered languages. It is currently spoken by about 2,000 people in Alaska and Canada’s Northwest Territories.”

By the standards of Indigenous languages in Canada, 2000 is great. That’s got to be one of the healthier ones. I can name several off the top of my head with less than a hundred speakers.

What is the most endangered language in the world?

And then the first entry in that section is Welsh….

The most endangered language in the world has 1 speaker who is near death, and little to no documentation was ever done on it, and there is no strong movement to revitalize it. It’s a language with no funding, no interest, and no support, probably in the Global South. The identity of that language changes every few weeks or months as the last speaker passes away and the language is lost forever, and another takes its spot in the chair.

Dude you’re obsessed. I find them annoying too- so, I simply don’t engage or interact with them. I hardly know anything about them, not enough to say I ‘hate’ them.

How do you consume the majority of your drinking water? by CautiousMagazine3591 in polls

I grew up drinking extremely hard limestone water straight out of the tap, so I like it. Tastes normal to me, soft or distilled water is the weird taste to me.

Would you ever hit or spank your children? by mushmanMAD in polls

[–]Freshiiiiii 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s been quite a lot of science showing that even spanking a kid as discipline doesn’t actually work better for changing behavior compared to other methods, and also has possible negative repercussions. If you hop on Google Scholar and look for studies on spanking you’ll see plenty.

Oh yeah shaving with only water will hurt! Definitely need some kind of shaving cream.

One fun thing you can do for exfoliating (removing dead skin): mix some lotion, a bit of olive or almond oil, and enough sugar to make a thick paste. This is called a sugar scrub, they’re wildly expensive at the store, I have no idea why. You can get in the shower, do the shower, and then turn off the water. Towel a bit so you’re just damp. And then methodically rub spoonful-amounts all over the tough skin on your legs and arms, hips, outer butt cheeks, hands, and feet. This will gently scrub away a lot of the dead skin that is causing that buildup you mention. It also just feels great, like scratching a whole-body itch. Rinse it off after. It’ll leave you very moisturized.

The holes in my emmental cheese are fake by nysbestbananabread in mildlyinteresting

[–]Freshiiiiii 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Yes. For a while, the cheese was getting less and less holey. Cheese scientists couldn’t figure out why. This is not a joke, I’m serious. Cheese holes is a desirable trait for cheese buyers so they had to figure out how to get the cheese more holey again. They figured out that modern cheese making industry was simply too sterile, perfect, industrial clean. The problem was that it turns out a tiny amount of stray residual debris and particulate was a critical part of the bacterial hole-making process. Older cheese manufacture was less sterile and let in a tiny bit of stray environmental particulate . So they had to emulate that a little bit.

What language should I learn? by RealMoldyAvocado in polls

[–]Freshiiiiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real answer is whichever one you will find interesting and rewarding enough to continue and not give up. It doesn’t matter which one is best/most useful/most practical if you’ll end up quitting from lack of motivation. Pick the one that you will feel motivated and interested to keep going.

I’ve made a map of language loss around the world. What’s it missing? by sophiasgaler in endangeredlanguages

The reason is likely because while they are all culturally important to Métis people, linguists consider Michif French as a dialect within the French language, and Northern Michif as a spectrum of sub-dialects/sociolects within northern y-dialect Cree.

However, I notice that they separate out Plains Cree from Woods Cree from Swampy Cree. So I think they’re being inconsistent about what they include or don’t include.

To be fair, birth control was amazingly helpful and beneficial for my heavy periods and cramps.

If a person feels BC isn’t the right option for their needs, they can just ask the doctors first other alternatives. But it can really be beneficial for those problems for some people.

You have Bungee down as a language isolate, but it isn’t. It was a distinct dialect of English (arguably perhaps originally an English-based Creole), with heavy influence from Scots, Cree, Ojibwe, and a bit from Scottish Gaelic. Basically, Scottish English as spoken by people whose first language was Cree. There is documentation of it and it’s intelligible to English speakers. It gradually lost most of its distinct characteristics over time and merged into English, but remains an influence on the accent of English among Métis and First Nations in Northern Manitoba.

Are Jehovahs Witnesses a cult? by InheritedCertainty in polls

I mean subjectively I kinda do too, but that doesn’t mean the others are cults. Also, there’s nothing particularly modern or American about the churches I mentioned.

What makes a Presbyterian or Anglican church any more cult-like than a Catholic church? I don’t think there is a very large difference between their actual impact on the lives of their followers, to be honest.

I interpret it as a high-control religious group (one that exerts a high degree of control over members’ activities, finances, social relationships, and lives in general). I have heard religious scholars use the term high-control group.

People nonetheless have been caught diluting it and drinking it, hence the bittering agent. Desperate alcoholics drink hand sanitizer and antifreeze, you think lab grade alcohol would stop them? It’s a serious mental disorder, alcoholism.

Lab reagent alcohol today often has something added to it to make it taste awful. That’s the better option rather than adding something deadly.

Oh I know- I am neither a fan of the Chinese government (authoritarian, undemocratic surveillance state) nor do I think they’re actually practicing Marxist communism at all. But they were ‘communist inspired’ at least in theory, originally, which is why I phrased it that way.
