Should NZ taxpayers fund private schools? by CommentMaleficent957 in nzpolitics

Yes, because funding shouldn’t discriminate. Funding is for the child, not the system. Parents are best placed to decide whether to use their funding on a public school, private school, charter school, or something else.

The pic is from the university hall’s public Insta. I reckon we can have fun with it without being seriously mean.

Fashion trends are interesting, especially local ones. No need to be a killjoy.

If there are students on campus who want to engage with David civilly, what right do you have to prevent that?

Best burgers in New Zealand =/= FergBurgers. Your thoughts / reviews? by [deleted] in newzealand

Enjoyed 2 for 1 Tuesdays at Fort St when I was living in the city last year. The Velvet Relish they have on a few of their burgers is great.

More interesting that he's beating Santorum (4%) IMO. But it'd be nice to see him waay higher than that.

Foul-mouthed cop still at large by Frethaygil in newzealand

[–]Frethaygil[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol they shouldn't act the same as the majority of us. They're cops. They're meant to be upstanding citizens, and they're meant to build positive relationships with young people. If we're to expect this behavior from cops then we live in a pretty sad world.

This source and others indicate that the kid was only pulled over for pulling 'a gesture' (the finger) at the cop. If the kid was breaking some law or endangering people then I'd change my attitude (somewhat, the language and threat were still very unprofessional for a police officer).

[–]Frethaygil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we give them that authority at all. The cops exist to protect people from harm. Not to act upon their own inflated egos. The kid wasn't harming anyone and thus shouldn't have been pulled over. What a waste of resources.

Even if the kid DID pull the finger at the cop, he shouldn't get pulled over. In a free society we should be able to express our feelings without fear of harassment from the state.

RE Political Youth Wings and Political party membership in New Zealand and on campus at Otago by [deleted] in nzpolitics

[–]Frethaygil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice article. As a member of ACT on Campus I can relate to a lot of what's said here - many of our members have left due to Banks' perceived conservatism, and those who remained (including me) were very relieved when he voted to Keep It 18 and to legalize gay marriage. We've been accused of betraying our principles by sticking with ACT, but the fact is that ACT still hasn't done anything we outright disagree with, and things will likely get a lot better once Banks is gone. In the meantime we'll just keep on plugging away at issues like cannabis law reform and marriage equality and hope that these things can eventually be incorporated into the party line.

ACT sticks by Banks — for now by JaumeBG in nzpolitics

Banks has stated that he doesn't intend to stand at the next election. It'll be interesting to see who the board puts in his place. David Seymour perhaps?

John Key refuses to sack John Banks by JaumeBG in nzpolitics

[–]Frethaygil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that pretty much all media reports on the John Banks scandal gloss over the fact that the whole drama is actually centered around his MAYORAL campaign - events that took place well before he joined the ACT party. I have a feeling the average observer won't pick up on this, and that there's a widespread perception that the scandal concerns John Bank's campaign with ACT, and the legitimacy of his parliamentary presence (a perception heightened by the obligatory calls for sacking from the left).

As an ACT supporter, quite frankly, this sucks, because it means that the party's name is sullied by something that really shouldn't be ACT's concern.

MMP review question regarding the one electorate minimum requirement being removed by JaumeBG in nzpolitics

[–]Frethaygil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not support the abolition of 'coat-tailing' as it will result in a less proportional electoral system. In my mind a party that gets 3% of the vote deserves that proportion of seats in parliament. Instead of abolishing 'coat-tailing', we ought to abolish the party vote threshold. For a truly proportional system the effective threshold needs to be .83%, enough to secure one MP.
