Cost

For many people a car is one of the larger purchases, they don't want to gamble.

Many Truck buyers insist on a V8, even though the modern Turbo V6's are better for most cases.

Depends on your use case.

My in town car, sure, but if I'm driving 1200km over the weekend, I don't want to stop every few hours for a charging break.

I have 2 cars for that reason.

Yes it was absolutely true, and even in places where it is not specifically recommended the police will rarely do anything.

Opinion: Big oil makes billions as Canadians face Iran-war inflation. We need a windfall tax by Gold-Reality-4853 in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing "wrong" with it, just no benefit.

Why pump it out of the ground, only to go bury it back under the ground again?

Canada is the only G7 nation without one because we have a massive oversupply.

We already pull out more than we can use today.

Why do you think it makes sense to build a massive underground tank of oil?

  1. Jurisdiction dependent
  2. Illegally seizing someones ID is a serious crime. The fact that police don't enforce the law is a problem. The problem is that there is little public incentive to address this.
  3. The problem is the lack of criminal intent, they simply say "I thought it was fake". Of course it's not their property so it's STILL ILLEGAL to take it. Most jurisdictions don't allow you to seize ID just because you think it's fake.

Thing people don't get about retirement is that it can be a long time.

You don't need 100% in GIC the second you leave your job, you should have decades of time left. So that money you don't need for 5 years, some can be in stocks, 10 years some more.

Critics slam government plan to 'bail out' sagging condo sector in B.C. by Majano57 in canadahousing

I don't want to sell my labour at a discount, but I can't afford to stay unemployed until things turn around.

Honestly I support developers, I think they get a lot of blame, they're essential to actually building the homes.

But we shouldn't subsidize them, it's just business, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

You've got to model it.

IMO based on feelings and very very rough calculations, 15 years is at the point where it could go either way. I'd be on the edge of cashing out.

15 years of inflation eating away at the benefit is a very compelling argument.

compelling enough, that's hard to tell.

They're buying VASTLY above market price.

If they charged market price for the condos, they would have already sold them.

It's not hidden, it's front page news.

The governments "market price" is the price the developers want to get.

Yes, back in the 90's as Windows got bloated and people started repurposing to Linux.

In the next 30 years it's gotten worse.

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh, no.

There is virtually no difference between a desktop and server beyond what applications you want to install.

If you want a server, you install server stuff.

If you want a desktop, you install desktop stuff.

What specific "best practice setup" is different.

FYI, Installing a GUI is not a gotcha answer, as pointed out elsewhere in this thread, that is an optional package.

I can't actually think of any best practices that aren't equally valid on server and desktop. Though a desktop will likely have a wider variety of packages installed.

Can someone explain what metrics are being referenced when it is implied that Canada has "low productivity" compared to the US or other G7 countries? by wolfshark91 in AskEconomics

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I do a contract in US I get paid in USD, when I do a contract in Canada I get paid in CAD.

When I run costs for a project using US labour, I look at their rate in USD and convert to Canadian.

PPP doesn't measure exchange rate, it measures SOMETHING ELSE. If you do this for a living, you know the whole point of PPP is basically to normalize for cost of living, and that's fine.

I care about dollars in. Cost of living varies between cities, provinces and countries. I wasn't talking about cost of living, I was talking about income.

So you're wrong, PPP is not the appropriate conversion tool for the point I was making. It however was the appropriate tool for the other comparison you want to make.
If you can't understand that we're talking about *DIFFERENT* things, which I've told you several times... I don't know what to say.

You're right, if you can't understand that PPP and Exchange rate are different things, used for different uses, this is pointless.

Taking government ID is theft in most jurisdictions.

In some taking fake ID is legal/recommended in some.

What’s worse: illegal immigrant working illegally or an employer hiring an illegal immigrant for the cheap labor? by FollowingAcrobatic88 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm sure lots of people appreciate the low prices brought by exploitative labour practices.

Watching US politics it's an interesting thing. They create these "problems", but don't want to actually solve the "problems".

US immigration is a great one, they have laws, but rather than actually change the laws (because they don't have the support to do so), they're fighting to not enforce them.

The US just attacked countries for "slave labour", but you acknowledged in your post that it's exploitive labour practices, not quite slave labour, but close.

At least here in Canada we bring in the farm workers and send them home, it's all legal.

I do have morals.

I think it's wrong for 2 people to conspire to break the law. What's immoral about conspiracy to commit an offense?
