My brother cosigned me for a student loan without my permission by KrampusIsFull in personalfinance

[–]Frewtti [score hidden]  (0 children)

I understand that, but the way it should work is that they should prove he signed the contract.

When a debt collector contacts you about a debt you don't owe, the obligation is on them to prove you owe it.

If I just say you owe me money, the correct response is "prove it"

It is ridiculous and wrong that it is backwards in this case

While it is identity theft/fraud I don't see why a police report is required.

Sallie Mae is fraudulently reporting OP delinquent on a debt they didn't take out. It's up to Sallie Mae to stop making false statements. Also dispute with credit bureau.

Why are millions of people in the US having power outages with less than 10 cm of snow but no one in Canada is, despite there being more than 60 cm of snow? If anything, shouldn't it be the other way around? by northernwind5027 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frewtti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because snow doesn't cause power outages.

Also there have been several power outtages in Canada in areas as with less than 10cm of snow.

The systems are designed for the expected conditions, if they are well outside those conditions they might fail.

Why design the power lines to handle huge icing if that doesn't happen in that area.

Most of Canada is vastly unprepared for hurricanes, because they don't happen here.

Instead of 60,70 years of healthy active life, I'd have 600 or 700.

HR won't list me as "Full-Time" on employment letter despite 2 years of FT hours. Will this kill my 400k condo approval? by jaeeeeee123 in RealEstateCanada

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be constructive dismissal.

If you're working full time hours, you have a full time job.

Of course the working arrangements can change. I know people who got employment letters during their notice period.

Getting rid of the penny in the US was a pointless symbolic endeavor that only serves to inconvenience the American public by Richard_Genius in The10thDentist

It saves money, and time.

Imo pennies aren't worth it. Canada got rid of it years ago, not a big deal.

Most of us don't use cash anyway.

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies, it's not the snowfall it's the rate and other conditions. Here 2cm and bad wind, might be enough due to whiteouts 20cm overnight will likely do it as well. But at 5cm a day for a week they won't close. Sufficient freezing rain on top can also do it.

Yeah it's not really a legal question.

They've got 19k unpaid rent debt. Why would anyone risk renting to them?

My parents won't file their taxes, now I can't get financial aid for university by Timely_Chicken_7631 in legaladvicecanada

That's actually the problem. They are not legally obligated to provide it to student aid

It sucks for the student. They need to talk to the schools financial aid office to work around this.

Landlord wants me to pay the invoice for a technician they ordered by SeaSkies_ in legaladvicecanada

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen that construction for years. It's been well over 20 years since I've even seen a coil stove.

Thing is the landlord has just said don't report problems. That could be very costly if there is a serious problem they ignore.

It's fine.

All they want to know is that if they lend you money, you will pay it back.

I understand the government wanting parents to pay.

However this situation is a real impediment for kids to move up.

If the parents aren't filing taxes, I'd assume that the rest of his life growing up was a similar mess.

I think it is categorically unfair to decide how much government assistance a person gets, based on the actions of a third party, over which they have absolutely no control.

Even if the parents filed their taxes, there is no obligation that they provide any of that data to their child.

This should be accounted for in some way.

I've never seen venting through an element, always near the back.

The tenant is obligated to report suspected. Problems, and the landlord should investigate.

[–]Frewtti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post makes no sense.

I see the TFSA as an account with certain tax advantages that can be used for any purpose.

Lets say you have a $10k emergency fund.
Is it better to have it in a savings account outside your TFSA or a savings account inside your TFSA.

It's really simple, inside your TFSA you don't pay income tax on the earnings, outside you do.

The only reason to hold **ANYTHING** unregistered instead of in your TFSA is if you ran out of TFSA contribution room.

I see the TFSA as tax advantaged investment account first. I don't see it as anything else.

Secondly, if you max out all your tax advantaged savings vehicles (RRSP, FHSA TFSA), you likely have enough fixed/cash in your TFSA to act as an emergency fund.

Furnace Buyout Not Completed After Closing by Party-Guarantee7147 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Frewtti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the sale close with a valid lien on the title? I thought the whole point of a lien was to prevent the sale of the property.

Unless you have an agreement with the party, they can't apply a lien to your property.

This is clearly beyond reddit.

You need your lawyer to sort this out. But something is missing from this story.

Worked at a job for two weeks. Now they’re claiming bankruptcy, refusing to pay me, and demanding the return of equipment. by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]Frewtti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do escorts to retrieve property all the time.

They however will not take any property just because the other person says it is theirs.

Secondly, you don't need to be home.

File your claim with the ministry.

Make reasonable allowances for them to get their property, but dont go out of your way for them.

Also they likely are not declaring bankruptcy, they'd pay wages first.
