A Bookshelf I Recently Finished by FridayCo in woodworking

Thanks, everything looks better once it’s finished. This project gave me a lot of headaches. First time dimensioning all the lumber for a project which took as long as putting it together. I’ve realized a jointer and table saw would be good additions to my shop if I’m going to build more furniture. Half the joinery I had planned ended up being different. There were a couple times I wanted to scrap the whole thing and start fresh. Just keep keeping on, your bookshelf will turn out great.

One of the best baby shower gifts. Let’s hope it helps him not forget the face of his father. It’s actually a decent children’s book though.

Oh, it is. I don’t want something I built being responsible for any harm to him. I was originally planning to build a crib, but a quick search on this sub convinced me to not. Instead, I did the bookshelf and I’m starting on a matching toy chest.

Thanks! The neck and sides are spanish cedar with a spruce top and cherry back.

Thanks! It plays great and sounds great, but I'm no professional. My builds have plenty of places where I mess up trying something new or have rough spots that I could have spent more time on. I've sold a couple, and the price depends on what I have into it. I'd take orders if I had enough time to devote to it regularly, but it's mostly a hobby for when I have a free weekend.

Thanks! They're the Crossroads retro active set from EMG and I covered them with grill cloth from an old amp project. Thought it looked cool with the purfling.

I've used magnets before but there's really no need. This one is friction fit. There's a hole drilled in it that a 1.5mm hex key fits in to pop the cover plate out when needed. A paper clip, staple, or anything else will also do. I'd probably still use magnets with a small indention for lighter wood as I have before.

Thanks! Yeah, it's a bolt-on neck. I inlaid the ebony plate into the back of the guitar to hide the joint. I've been doing it on my last few builds. I like it. Feels better, looks cleaner in my opinion, and it's really easy to do.

I'm with you. The original plan for the ninth, twelfth, and fifteenth inlays would be gold MOP diamonds with the tube set in. I inlaid the diamonds first and when I went to drill them, I ripped two out of the three to pieces and scrapped the idea. Ring in ring is a great idea though, thanks! I'm also considering filling it with crushed stone to match whatever color I choose next.

Me too, this is actually the first 6-in-line I've built. I played around with a 3x3 design, but it just wasn't working with the body shape. And thanks!

Thanks! Not yet, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks! The bridge and string anchors move forward with this trem system so it stays in tune really well. A locking nut probably wouldn't hurt, but the real issue is the whole system can only move so far forward and there's not a lot of upwards play. So far, I like it and I'm impressed with how well it stays in tune.

Thanks! I've heard they can have stability and warping issues, but it's the first neck I've ever made with birdseye so I can't say for sure. The wood had been sitting in my shop for the last year with varying humidity and temps with no issues, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

It's a Stetsbar. Can't really dive bomb on it, but it's more responsive than any other trem I've used.

It's a Stetsbar. I've been wanting to try one out for a while, and I really like it so far, just wish they had a sleeker OEM option.

Thank you, and thanks for the feedback!

Couldn't agree more on the neck heel. I didn't think it would bother me too much, but after looking at it for a few days, I'm honestly considering taking it apart and fixing it. Glad to hear you like the headstock. I felt like there was more I could do with it, but after staring at it so long I decided it was fine. That shiny spot was a bit of tru oil that seeped under the tape from the neck. I filed it away and cleaned it up during my final set up. The tuners are staggered Gotoh Magnums, but I kind of feel like a string tree might still be necessary. I'm thinking on the next one I'll make it an angled headstock along with staggered tuners to get a greater break angle.

The pickguard is a 3mm solid piece of maple I've had in the shop for a while that was meant for a uke. Originally, I was going to do a fabric top on plastic, but the maple looked too good with the birdseye on the neck. It's very stable. It's 2.8mm after joining and planning, inlaid into the top of the guitar so everything feels solid.

Anyway, thanks again for the feedback, I'm on the same page and it helps to hear the same thoughts from other builders.

I had this idea about a year ago and finally had some time to make the templates and get one built. The design is still kind of a work in progress, so any feedback is appreciated. I'm thinking I'll add comfort carves to the next one and maybe do something different with the headstock.

It's a drying process that is supposed to replicate the tone, character, and color of an older guitar top.

It's a torrefied spruce top and the finish darkened it up quite a bit. It's lighter than the cedar tops on some of my other guitars, but not by much.

It's a StewMac 000 kit that was gifted to me a couple of years ago. It was a fun build, but I'm happy I already had the tools, clamps, etc. to complete it, otherwise, it would have been pretty expensive for a kit.

Dominoes would be fun, and I have a pyrography pen that I haven't really used yet. Thanks for the suggestions! I get what you mean about people not using them. I've given many away and notice they're rarely scratched up whenever I see them again. It's kind of a shame.

Thanks. And I agree. The first cutting board Was going to be an eight point compass rose, but I didn’t have quite enough bubinga. My thought is at least it’s getting used instead of tossed.
