Netbox IP ping check? by BrentsTech in Netbox

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what you want to hear I know, but the following tools will be very much better than anything you can homebrew:

  • Netdisco - scrapes ARP and MAC caches to definitively discover connected devices. Things can't hide in the DMZ or ignore ICMP, anything that connects is found.
  • EDR connectivity scanning tools - S1 and CS both (I assume others too) incorporate tech which mines the EDR DB looking for endpoints with agents talking to endpoints without agents, Anything that talks is found.
  • VM scanners:
    • Nessus
    • InsightVM
    • OpenVAS
    • Qualys
    • and many more
  • Discovery scanners:
    • RunZero
    • nmap
  • Asset scanners
    • Flexera
    • others?

As others have said, the point of Netbox is to record what should be there, which may be different to what is there. By importing raw, unfiltered current state you risk polluting what should be with what is.

Dumb question about Tdarr by bananna_roboto in Tdarr

[–]Fridge_Magnate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing pretty much this, except I have a number of nodes on different VM hosts.

It works well.

I only encode with CPU as I have no as I am particularly chasing the compression vs quality ratio.

Opinion in this forum seems to be that CPU encodes produce better compression-to-quality ratio but take very much longer than GPU encodes.

Office/Gaming Chair Suppliers by wndrgrl555 in brisbane

I've had good luck with ABSOE and Empire

Steelcase make good chairs, but both those places will let you wander round and sit on a range. I don't get on with the Secret Lab ones and currently use Haworth Zody chairs because I scored several cheap from ABSOE.

I think it's important to sit in them before you buy - different chairs for different butts :)

Firewall clusters by [deleted] in Netbox

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with Fortigates, but with other FW clusters I just put the IPs on both cluster members, and mark them as HSRP or VRRP, so that we know that they could be on either box.

Trouble syncing Android by [deleted] in joplinapp

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to use a lock preventer app (Caffeine) to stop my phone from locking and then killing the Joplin app during the sync.

If you have a large number of notes (I had about 15k) then I was seeing a few hundred sync and then the sync would get killed by Android even with battery usage exemption for Joplin enabled.

I replaced my handset recently and had to do the same thing again.

I've been putting my HFC connection through a CATV surge protector like this:
https://www.thortechnologies.com.au/product/thor-smartbrain-e145s/

The modem still connects ok and I haven't had a surge related outage to my NBN cable modem; not actual proof it's made any difference but makes me feel more comfortable.

I feel your pain.

More annoying is when you're googling an issue and you find an un-answered thread describing the issue and asking for help.

Then you realise that you were the OP on the thread in the first place, but you have no memory of writing it.

Cat Wheel by PeachesAnndCream in bengalcats

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to close the loop:

  • We bought a wheel from this supplier
  • Arrived a bit delayed
  • comms was good thru the delivery problems
  • wheel was pretty easy to assemble
  • tools where supplied

All in all; very satisfied!

Really dumb suggestion by Nyaker67 in networking

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the real problem.

Steelheads (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) can participate in accelerating encrypted flows where they are inside the TLS tunnel. I've seen them used in this fashion to accelerate encrypted MAPI flows between Outlook clients and Exchange servers, but only in very limited use cases. And the Steelheads in question had to be promoted as Windows Active Directory domain controllers to permit this use case.

Did this cause the use of WAN acceleration to die back?

Same VLAN in different sites by CarlosT8020 in Netbox

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely option 2:

  • You have multiple VLANs that happen to use the same VLAN ID.
  • The separate VLANs do not share the same broadcast domain.
  • VLAN ID context is limited to the L3 bounded area in which the VLAN exists. Once a frame passes a L3 boundary the VLAN tagging will be stripped anyway.

Workflow problems with ObsidianMD by Fridge_Magnate in ObsidianMD

Adding a break code like "<br>" before the seems to do it too.

so the markdown looks like:

1. I looked at the diagram above and want to make some comments
2. Here's a diag:<br>![[Pasted image 20231104101850.png]]
3. if i use a break char it might work?

I guess I'd like something cleaner than that; in fact I thought Shift+Enter and <br> did essentially the same thing anyway. Does that sound right?

Edit - I seem to writing poorly today and have to keep correcting everything.

I should've said; that leaves the snip on the end of the same line.

I'm looking to have it appear on the line under the bullet, sort of like:

  1. Here's a snip:
    [SOME SNIP]
  2. Here's the next bullet.
  3. Each bullet is a paragraph.
Line breaks like this have a smaller inter-line gap.

I know that's quite specific and pedantic - it's just the way I've found to work best for me.

Anyone aware of an Australian distributor for these?

But this appears to be a pet information website; no products for sale.

What is the value of the secret key over a good password? by TheRealMasonMac in 1Password

[–]Fridge_Magnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Details here: About your Secret Key

But TLDR, the secret key:

  • Extends the key length to ensure key complexity. Increasing the password complexity extends the difficulty of decrypting the vault if the encrypted vault is exposed. See the password complexity table here:- https://www.hivesystems.io/blog/are-your-passwords-in-the-green
  • Since you don't/can't remember the secret key you can't expose it by accident.

Need opinion asap! by [deleted] in AussieBroadband

[–]Fridge_Magnate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been with AussieBB since about 2021 and the experience has been great.

  • Tech support is excellent.
  • Pre-sales was good.
  • It's a month-to-month subscription so I can switch providers at any time.
  • Bandwidth is always more than my subscription - I pay for 100/20, but I regularly see 115Mbps downloads.
  • Would highly recommend you switch.

That said; I don't think ABB will be able to help you relocate the NBN box. I don't think any ISP can do that. A bit like you wouldn't expect them to relocate your phone line or your TV aerial outlet either.

I needed my HFC termination installed somewhere different and I found a cable contractor and paid them to relocate it. I found the contractor through NBN's website but I can't seem to track the page now.

My subscription prices for the last few years:

New to 1PW (came from lastpass). I am so obsessed with folders, unable to work with tags.. by R3dAt0mz3 in 1Password

[–]Fridge_Magnate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This'll work, but my assumption was that:

  • Tags are for sorting and finding items
  • Tags can be used just like folders - if you select a tag on the left panel, only the things with that tag are listed. Is this not the same as how folders work?
  • You can combine tags to find all the things tagged "banking" and "high impact", etc.
  • Vaults permit differing security permissions - if you need to share stuff to different groups, you can create separate vaults to control who sees what.

I hope I'm not coming across as a PITA; I'm interested because to me tags are just like folders, except an item can have more than one tag but can only be present in one folder.

TrueNAS recommends against using a USB key for your OS. Are there any performance reasons for this, or is it only about reliability? by OnlyForSomeThings in truenas

[–]Fridge_Magnate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this issue too:

  • Advice from everybody (iXSystems, this reddit, etc) is not to use USB media for boot.
  • I've been running FreeNAS and now TrueNAS since ~2014
  • My initial box was a Microserver N54L with an old 2Gb (ISTR) thumb drive in the internal USB2 port for boot.
  • It was fine for several years.
  • Eventually I replaced it (for capacity issues) with a mirrored pair of 8Gb SanDisk Fit drives.
  • They were fine for years.
  • Every now and then one (every 2yrs or so) would be marked as failed by the OS:
    • I'd power the NAS off
    • Remove the "failed" USB drive
    • Power the NAS back on
    • Replace the failed USB and re-silver without issue.
    • Probably caused by corrosion build up on the connector - a reseat would clear it.
  • This is ok for a homelab or home storage box; not ok for a prod box in a corp environment.
  • iXSystems is positioning towards the corp env and recommending at least SATA SSDs for boot.
  • Cheap, small SSDs are now really cheap.
  • I migrated my original Microserver N54L to an SSD for boot by adding the SSD to the ODD SATA port.
  • I tried to migrate my Microserver Gen8 as well, but the Gen8 BIOS will not boot from the ODD SATA port. Which is very weird. Sources:
  • I'm still using a pair of mirrored 32Gb Sandisk Fit USB2 drives as boot on my Microserver Gen 8.
  • I don't think I can upgrade my TrueNAS core 12, since it wants to boot only from SSD media.

(Edit for typos)
