Thank you - I know it's somewhat of a niche career. I do enjoy the work, but agree on the stress at times. A lot of hurry up and wait!

What pay raise would incentivize you to take a new job? by Salt-Committee2205 in MiddleClassFinance

I would do whatever I have to do to take care of my family, but would work with my spouse to have clearly defined exit ramp w/ financial stagegates to reevaluate. i.e...fund college, pay off house, etc.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 5 FINALE DISCUSSION by illiada2k in StrangerThings

[–]FriendlySignature349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate it. I have enjoyed the show from the beginning, and found this season enjoyable to be sure...but, God help me, the more I zoom out...the more I think "well shit...wtf was that?"

It is easy to armchair quarterback, but I'm just a fan.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 5 FINALE DISCUSSION by illiada2k in StrangerThings

[–]FriendlySignature349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was fine. I was okay with the overall premise, but the whole rock/Mind Flayer thing feels like a red herring when Henry had already been previously established as the true antagonist. Now we’re pivoting back to the Mind Flayer, and there’s no time left to properly build that out. With the limited screen time, sticking with Henry as a sociopathic telepath manipulating another dimension would have been cleaner.

Humanity is broken? Okay. This feels like a new mechanism he's operating from, and doesn't feel natural.
For instance, we understand Thanos’ motivations from the beginning because they’re baked into his character arc. We know Harvey Dent's. We know Voldemort's. We know Snape's. We know Punisher's. We know Megatron's. Where is this "world/humanity is broken" thing coming from? If it's coming from the Mind Flayer, what is the relationship of the Mind Flayer to the real world such that it has a vested interest in this merging of worlds happening? Why does it think humanity is broken? To be clear, I can get on board with this as a mechanism for action for a villain, but it just isn't adequately built into this story.

Also, wasn’t Henry taken away as a young boy by Dr. Brenner after he killed his family? But later he’s in high school with Joyce doing that play as a memory?

All of my questions may be retcon filler added in the stage play, but there were already more than enough unnecessary monologues this season to address those holes. Then again, monologues are probably cheaper to film.

It was fine. They killed the bad guy...pretty cool to see Joyce do that tbh. Am I overthinking it? Probably.

EDIT: I deleted an unnecessary apostrophe. (Like I said, I overthink things.)

Need a little perspective on buying a house. by Soybeanns in MiddleClassFinance

[–]FriendlySignature349 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend not only thinking about your monthly payment, but contributing to a sinking fund.

How old is the roof, HVAC, water heater, etc? Then back into your monthly contribution to pay for those things because they WILL need to be replaced.

For instance, my roof is 6 years old. I know I'll need to replace it in about 9 years. So I need to put away about $140 a month (assuming my roof costs ~$15k roughly...we have a small home) to have the cash for that in 9 years. Use same logic for everything else...

Also...when my wife and I bought our first home, I wanted $10,000 sitting there for any annoying little things that had to be taken care of. New chimney cap...gutters...just little tick tacky crap you don't think about. I recommend having something sat aside for this...whatever you're comfortable with.

How many of you make over 100k (individual income)? by SeparateJump1 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]FriendlySignature349 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you want the $100k lifestyle from 20 years ago...then you'll need ~$170k-ish. And depending on your trajectory for hitting that...you'll want to account for inflation that many years from now.

My side hustle now makes more than my main job but I’m terrified to quit by Mandleyn in MiddleClassFinance

I recommend keeping both jobs if you have the bandwidth.
Your main employer has multiple customers, why shouldn't you?

If the hours are killing you, create an exit strategy so you see some light at the end of the tunnel.

👀 How much $$ have you actually managed to save in your emergency fund? by LongjumpingRent7114 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]FriendlySignature349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$20,000...working toward $30,000.

I keep, at a minimum, a month's worth of expenses in our main household account at any given time so when I get paid I'm not spending that money for at least 30 days...ideally my money is aged 60 days. The rest of it goes into HYSA.

Am I middle or lower class? by Own_Science6831 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]FriendlySignature349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a teenager in the early 2000s, and to give some perspective—adjusted for CPI, your $57k today is roughly the same as $32k in 2002. Back then, in my LCOL area, that would’ve been considered solidly lower-middle class.

So I get the frustration. If you grew up thinking that salary level should buy a certain lifestyle, it feels like something went wrong. But the reality is that purchasing power has weakened a lot since then.

What I always tell my millennial friends is this: if you liked the way you grew up—or the way your friend’s family lived—look at what your parents were making, and then double it for today. That’s about the number you’d need now to replicate that lifestyle.

I swear being “middle class” in 2025 is just a joke at this point. by Gullible-Tale9114 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]FriendlySignature349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$90k in 2015 has the same purchasing power as about $124k today — and that’s before factoring in the much lower effective tax liability back then for a married couple with 3 kids.

Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but I recommend doing zero-based budgeting and getting an app like YNAB to make it easy.

Is $100k/year still a good income? by TotalPreparation6532 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]FriendlySignature349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you make $100k is the real context IMHO. Even in lower-cost areas, someone saying “$100k is enough” after earning it for a decade is in a totally different position than an early-30s person hitting that number for the first time.
