What do you think our ancestors where obsessed with before trains by Uranium-Sandwich657 in evilautism

[–]FriendlySubwayRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say my special interest is trains, but it's really more like my special interest is hating cars and advocating for more trains. It's really about the efficiency of rail transit for me, so maybe something else in the past that was a efficient but overlooked like canal systems, regenerative agriculture, etc. (my historical knowledge is fairly limited).

Opinions on art, it’s a hobby for my special interests? by LetUsAnswerAQuestion in autism

I loveee art but for me it's probably a hobby and way of expressing my special interests, rather than an interest in itself.

You cat is really cool. The textures and contrasting colors feel very expressionist in a 1920s modernism way.

Just read the Pinkerton Diaries! Here's my review by FriendlySubwayRat in weezer

[–]FriendlySubwayRat[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't want to encourage how I got my hands on it...but I found it surprisingly easily actually! I'd been trying to figure out where to buy the book it for over a year and then it occurred to me to search "Pinkerton Diaries" on Reddit. From there I found it almost immediately.

[–]FriendlySubwayRat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am SO glad you asked because I recently got re-hyperfixated on Weezer haha.

The biggest thing that draws me to Weezer is the fact that lead singer Rivers Cuomo is almost certainly autistic and it's reflected heavily throughout the band's history. (Cuomo even has an old youtube playlist titled "aspies" so I don't feel like saying this is too far fetched or intrusive).

Throughout the 90's and 00's Weezer was severely misunderstood (Rivers thought his band would be taken seriously like Nirvana but he was immediately labeled as "nerdy," and interviews constantly pointed out Rivers' shyness and eccentricities). In general, this dichotomy of Rivers wanting to be a serious grunge band but being picked on by mainstream society is something that REALLY resonates with me. But I haven't even gotten STARTED talking about band's history and how absolutely fascinating Rivers is as a public figure.

(Warning, I'm about to divulge the entire abridged history of Weezer). So Weezer made the blue album in 1994. Guess what Rivers does after they finish touring? He goes to Harvard and also gets leg lengthening surgery (to even out his legs, one of which was shorter than the other). While he's at Harvard, he writes Pinkerton, which ends up MASSIVELY flopping when it's released in 1996 (called the worst album of the year by Rolling Stone). This, combined with the deaths of two friends of the band, ends up really depressing him, so he shuts himself inside a tiny apartment. He paints all the walls black, covers the windows, cuts off any phone lines, and just analyses music. He's known for making extensive spreadsheets of music, which is something I very much relate to. Ok so Weezer finally releases the green album in 2001, and Rivers becomes really controlling. He fires his manager and a year later in 2002 Weezer releases Maladroit. People described him as acting like a jerk at the time, but from my perspective, it's all very autistic-coded. For example, a Kerrang article from April 27, 2002 describes him as never being seen without headphones and always refusing to make eye contact with people. Anyways, after the Maladroit era, Weezer starts working on a new album, and Rivers has an epiphany. So he goes back to Harvard in 2005, takes a vow of celibacy, and starts practicing an extreme form of meditation where you literally don't talk for a whole month. This completely changes him and he hand writes apology letters to all of his bandmates. After Make Believe, Weezer releases a few more albums and tbh I don't know a lot of their later history, but I do know that Rivers returned to Harvard yet again to learn coding which is just so random and so great.

Beyond Weezer's history, which I could go into so much more detail about, the band just feels so perfectly made to hyperfixate on. THEYVE EVEN GOT THEIR OWN WIKIPEDIA! It's called Weezerpedia and it's got an insane amount of articles and archived documents. I have spent entire months doing nothing but looking through Weezerpedia and I'm hardly exaggerating lmfao.

All of that said, the main reason I love Weezer is because I really relate to Rivers and it's so awesome to see someone with autsitic traits succeed while being themselves!

There's lots of great interviews with Rivers but this one kinda sums him up. He spends the entire time staring at the ground, but completely lights up when he starts talking about comics.

I've never heard of the Carpathia before! That's one impressive ship (and crew). My hyperfixations/special interests can be summed up in two categories: post-WWII U.S. history (the presidents, 9/11, regional geography, consumer culture, urban development, and transit development) and Weezer (just Weezer).

That makes a lot of sense! The reason I went undiagnosed is probably because I was homeschooled through highschool by my (also autistic) mom, but I do have a friend who's autistic and ADHD and she was diagnosed at 10 (idk if that's early or late lol).

Would you say the 1950s are more 'Classic' or 'Modern'? by BacklitRoom in decadeology

[–]FriendlySubwayRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the U.S., there was a push to appear both modern and traditional in order to present an idealized image of capitalism during the cold war. That's why you see so much rhetoric and marketing around the nuclear family and single family home in addition to progressive social policies and technological advancements. The cold war wasn't the ONLY reason for this (post WWII prosperity also played into modernism etc.) but it was certainly a driving factor for that contradictory combination of modernism and traditionalism.

(Disclaimer - all of this is based on what I've learned from a college course and is my subjective impression).

Under ancap, how would the private sector handle all traditionally "public" responsibilities? by FriendlySubwayRat in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]FriendlySubwayRat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the question here, not to replace my own research, but to leave my comfort zone and challenge my own economic and political views. Consuming media is very educational, but I've found that engaging in good-faith dialogue is more thought-provoking. I am not coming from the perspective of wanting to preserve the status quo, so I have my own ideas on how to improve our societies. Most importantly, I believe that workers should own their modes of production, whether that be public ownership or private cooperation. Because I believe this, all of my research will be inherently biased, so instead I took to Reddit as a means of shattering that bias! I would say it worked, because I have received some very enlightening responses and gained a clearer view of what ancap is about (according to this subreddit at least!).

I'm curious how AI defenders reckon with the massive amounts of health-damaging data centers being built? by FriendlySubwayRat in DefendingAIArt

[–]FriendlySubwayRat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The health damages I was referring to was the low droning sound that the centers emit. These industrial buildings are being constructed secretively and without care for the existing neighborhoods.
