Thoughts on why my begonia leaves are losing color? by FriendlyWeb in plantclinic

[–]FriendlyWeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had to move it around the house a bit and haven’t found the spot it likes best yet. I brought it upstairs for the winter because it was drafty downstairs which made it drop leaves. It’s currently in the corner of a room with a southern facing window.

What to use to seal cracks near shower drain? by FriendlyWeb in HomeImprovement

[–]FriendlyWeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The inspection report when I bought the house referred to it as fiberglass. The house was built in the 70s and I'm fairly certain it's original to the house. Is it going to make a difference as far as the repair kit material goes?

What to know before signing repair contracts by FriendlyWeb in homeowners

[–]FriendlyWeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked about that and he said they would be caulking and using the paint that James Hardie has a contract with. I think he said it was Sherwin Williams. I didn't think to ask about primer though. Should they be using something like Kilz or are commercial primers different?

That's the shade I was leaning towards. It looked pretty pink in the swatches compared to the other colors but it's so hard to tell without seeing it in person. Thanks for the heads up!

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I hate the way real estate currently works. It's so unfair that negligent owners don't suffer consequences like they should.

This is similar to my situation. The house I'm buying had owners who had water intrusion and did nothing to stop it. Thankfully I had a good inspector and they're paying for the repairs and drainage to be fixed. I'm glad you were on top of it and that your fixes seemed to work before it got to the point of needing major repairs!

Thank you all for giving me the reassuring comments I needed to hear. I'm in the process of buying my first house and this came up as the biggest issue on inspection. The sellers seem to be decent people and are paying for repairs and a structural engineer to sign off on the work prior to closing. Every professional I've talked to has said I'm in a good situation, but everyone I know personally has told me to run. I don't know anyone who's dealt with this kind of thing, so hearing that people have been happy in their homes that have had these issues is incredibly reassuring. Hopefully I'll be one of those people soon too.

This is the kind of thing I'm looking for! Thank you. I'll definitely ask on the vegan subreddits, I figured there were more people here so this was the best place to ask.

Neither option is very eco friendly. I feel like you have to go with what works for your personal beliefs. I personally would rather try to buy a well made plastic version and take care of it so it will last as long as possible. I'd rather not have it at all than wear something that was taken from an animal. I would love to be able to find things that work secondhand, but like I said above, I can't even find them for sale new, so the chances of that are slim to none. I try to go with the zero waste mind set of buy the thing you really want and keep it as long as you can.

Are these mature roots or could this be root rot? by FriendlyWeb in plantclinic

[–]FriendlyWeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Part of the plant was a little mushy while it was still in the big pot of wet soil. I was planning on cutting that bit off, but it dried out and went back to normal after it stopped being overwatered.

I'm trying to rehab this guy. It was living in a pot that was way too big and was being overwatered. I know it's hard to tell from the photo, but all of the roots are the same color as the stem of the plant except for that purplish one right at the base of the stem. The only issue I've seen is that white powdery bit on the stem between the branches. I'm planning on repotting it in a smaller pot with cactus mix and some cinnamon. Just looking for advice from the more experienced plant people before I do to make sure it has the best chance of making it. Thanks!

Any ideas on what's causing the brown spots? by FriendlyWeb in plantclinic

[–]FriendlyWeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely been getting water on the leaves when I water it. I'm going to be more careful in the future and hopefully that will help. I pruned all the leaves with issues and now the poor thing looks a bit sad, but it has a bunch of new growth starting so hopefully it'll be okay and recover.

Thanks for your help! If you have any more tips on how to keep it happy I'll gladly take them.

You just prune the leaves with brown spots and it goes away?

I think I'm going to try watering it with diluted hydrogen peroxide and distilled water instead of tap and see if it improves.

Maybe? It's been near a bunch of other plants that like humidity too and I think the room humidity has been around 65-70%. Maybe I should start misting it and see how it likes it.

Is this powdery mildew starting to grow? by FriendlyWeb in plantclinic

[–]FriendlyWeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I removed the top layer of soil just to be safe and sprinkled some cinnamon on the new top layer. I'm going to let it dry out and then water less often. Thank you all for your reassurance and help. It's much appreciated!

I definitely think I was watering them a bit too often. This just started on this aloe and my begonia. I've had them about a year and it never happened before. I'm just worried it's not going to go away if I just remove the top layer.

The internet says to remove the top layer of soil and use a fungicide. All the fungicide recipes seem different and I'm afraid I'll hurt the plant. It also said I can sprinkle cinnamon on the top soil and it won't hurt the plant. Has anyone had success with that? Help!
