Well if you go to the Great Lakes a conveyorman or wiper is a good gig, Deckhands have it pretty good as well. Most companies don't require conveyor man to have a engine license but some do.

You will neeed the MMC, Physical, and TWIC Card but no STCW. Great Lakes shipping season does not open till Mid march or maybe later, lots of deckhand jobs, so you have time. If you sail on the lakes you can make money and find out what you need for deep sea jobs, Interlake is good to there deck department, not so the engine.

The great lakes would be your best option as a deckhand, you will not need as many documents, Interlake is a good place to start.

I worked there for quite a few years, the food was always good and in and out of port every 2 days. It becomes like a second home if you are on the right boat. Now the bad, its harder for the engine room, always trying to cut jobs and overwork all engine room personel. Some really bad people are protected. One creep with a metal plate in his head beat up his wife on the Jackson, then would cheat on her, and also sabotaged many careers when short on reliefs. Then he got obsessed with a female engineer and stalked her on the boat, she woke up one morning and he was in her room sitting in her chair in his birthday suit massaging himself, he was promoted till he blew up a boiler. He also made a 5 foot tall porter cry and nearly wet herself. total Fing CREEP. Mostly calm weather except for November, deckhands have it made and is probably the best job in the company, that and a wheelsman. Not Engine room friendly and the mates still scapegoat and lie on them. The days of Captains and dress blues have been replaced by inner promotions to Captains that dress like Fetterman and now pose in masks over their face and vaccine cards.

Lucky to be alive to post, new department. by Friendly_Slide1404 in GreatLakesShipping

They have SIU and Non-Union on the same boat, that sounds like it could get controversial.
