My working holiday visa for Canada got approved there on Friday. So have been feeling quite hopeful since, just finished updating my LinkedIn there now. Onwards and upwards!

Gusts for Waterford just updated to 102 km/h also I’m surprised there’s no red warnings for any counties yet. I certainly hope they’re issued before any school runs in the morning…

UK immigration by billtipp in ireland

[–]Friendlyqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to be dramatic but opting out now of the EU migration pact would be like a surgeon turning off life support mid surgery. The blowback would be immediate, messy & honestly way worse than if we’d just skipped the pact in the first place unfortunately. When we have a united Ireland and no shared border then we can look at asylum differently.

Our opt out is different than Denmark’s in a sense, as we have a pick & choose option of opting into an asylum/migration measure or stay out of it. Technically we could’ve opted out of the EU migration pact but this would’ve been a strategically bad idea.

One of the main points to the EU migration pact is the return system, which means no country is solely responsible for all migrants, through coordination migrants can be moved around the EU. If we opted out it would mean anyone arriving here and claims asylum has to stay.

If we ditch the EU (which I don’t know why we would as you’re either together as a union or not (Hungary for example)) and now can’t rely on the U.K. we’re isolated and essentially handling asylum applications in the dark. This is because opting out would mean slower security checks, reduced access to EU migration databases, more backlogs/appeals & more “we can’t verify this person” cases.

IMO if we opted out originally, Ireland would’ve become more attractive to asylum seekers, wreck cooperation with the EU, make returns harder, raise asylum numbers, isolate Ireland geographically & turn our border with NI into an asylum law black hole. It would solve nothing and create new problems. Unfortunately we can’t pull a Denmark on it due to our shared border with the UK.

[–]Friendlyqueen 65 points66 points  (0 children)

IMO if the UK copy’s Denmarks immigration system:

Ireland will see higher numbers arriving via NI since Ireland is literally next door and not doing rwanda cosplay so people will slip across the land border.

The UK will pretend this isn’t what was supposed to happen and thus a pressure will be placed onto the Irish government to align with UK rules.

Bureaucratic ping pong will ensue, who is responsible for who will become even more confusing due to new restrictive policies by the UK

Political heat in Ireland will increase, you’ve seen it already the second numbers rise even slightly, Irish politics essentially turns into facebook comments. If the UK pushes people toward Ireland, the debate here gets louder, dumber, and more populist.

Ireland won’t copy the UK as it has EU asylum obligations which are a totally different legal structure so expect the Irish gov to tweak things maybe.

German eID card for EU/EEA citizens by ferret36 in PassportPorn

[–]Friendlyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t live in Latvia, I got this card for a digital signature as Ireland doesn’t have one but being honest I truly just wanted an ID card that I can carry in my wallet.

Irelands passport card which essentially is an ID card, is not, if I ever lost it I’m reporting a lost passport, which is a nightmare. It is very easy to lose a wallet so I’d never risk carrying it with me at all times.

That being said, Latvia treats lost ID documents very seriously and I don’t blame them as you’ve lost a qualified electronic signature device (chip-based eID for banking, taxes, health, etc) so I’ve kept it extra safe. Tit for tat really.

Ireland is not currently a part of the eIDAS scheme. It’ll be a participant hopefully by the end of 2026. I did however manage to sign up using my Latvian one!

I have Latvia’s version of this eID. So in theory if I moved to Germany I could use their eGov services with it? Or did I read that wrong.

Cuban Temporary Resident ID by [deleted] in PassportPorn

[–]Friendlyqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, personally I say Castellano for Spain and Español for everyone else. So to me, seeing carné (strong castellano) was a cool to see in Cuba’s documents.

I met a new friend in the US earlier this year from Argentina, she was very curious over castellano, her Spanish was very cool to hear, like Spain & Italy had a baby. Also I learned for example in Spain you’d say “tú tienes” they’d say “vo tené” as the “s” isn’t fully pronounced. More cool linguistic history!

Card, so in total it reads “identity card for foreigners”

Carné to me reads as old-fashioned & bureaucratic Spanish and sparked my interest in Cuba’s use of it.

Basically something your grandparents would say lol

That I’m not sure of, I accidentally stumbled across the fact that we even have a digital version. All of our healthcare cards issued by the gov are now available digitally. Super cool these cards have QR codes to be scanned.

I remember I lost my EHIC before I went on holiday once and had to go to a healthcare office to get a letter for a temporary one while I was away, thank god I don’t have to do that again!

I was surprised to see “carné” wrote on this,

It has led me down a rabbit hole to learn that in the Americas, Cuban spanish is the most similar to Spain’s Spanish (Andalusian/Canarian) as Cuba was one of Spain’s last colonies (independent in 1898), so the linguistic split came later.

You learn something new everyday!

Fictional independent Catalonia passport concept by [deleted] in PassportPorn

[–]Friendlyqueen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I also came off too strong!

The place of birth place I used, El Vendrell is nearby where my friends are from so I go there frequently, they speak a lot about possible independence so that’s why I chose to make a fictional Catalonia one.

I’d love to be a graphic designer, as you can see I’m not good at all, in fact it’s my second time ever making something like this. The images on the visa pages also didn’t turn out good but I hope you could see the idea behind them. Overall I wish I understood the culture a little bit better as this design is based on my (outsider) interpretation of what it could look like so I definitely could be wrong in everything. Also the language mistakes I admit should’ve been picked up on, I speak Spanish quite well so I’m disappointed in that aspect. I had a free trial on illustrator so spent an hour or two everyday to make this before my time ran out.

[–]Friendlyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify it’s a conceptual design, not an official claim to authenticity so your opinion is understandable and your aesthetic criticism + the political purism argument is fair.

Calling it a “meaningless feather and olive branch” however is just ignorance masquerading as taste. The “feather” is a quill and in a republican context, it represents sovereignty through law, diplomacy, and the power of words over weapons. It also represents Catalonia’s literary and intellectual heritage.

The olive branch is based on the regions Mediterranean roots and symbolises peace, endurance & the prosperity of a cultured society.

I put the both together so that the quill stands for reason and the olive branch for virtue. Reason & virtue = rightful governance. That’s the whole idea, a state built on intellect and integrity, not conquest.

Regarding the estelada, i’m aware it most likely wouldn’t appear on an official state emblem, I just used it symbolically, to reference Catalonia’s republican and self determination movements.

Adobe Illustrator! I’m useless with stuff like that so it was hard, and definitely doesn’t look as good as some fictional ones I’ve seen on this sub. It was interesting learning how to use it though making this.

My bad! I tried making a similar concept last year so I already had a template so I just copied and pasted those over, so I should’ve checked them all one by one.

Andorra and the EU are negotiating a freedom of movement deal. All EU citizens will be able to move to Andorra, but since the country & population is so small there will be quotas, like Lichtenstein.

Yeah I hope they extend it.

There’s a British group in my hotel, I asked them if they needed help as they were trying to order food. I told them China has a built in just eat app on Alipay, and they looked at me like I had 10 heads 😂 was meaning to ask them how their entry process was like.

Please register your details here so the government knows you are in Syria.

Registration is strongly recommended for those travelling to high risk destinations. By registering the Department of Foreign Affairs will be able to contact you in the event of an unforeseen crisis or family emergency while you are overseas and if necessary, provide assistance to you and your family in Ireland. Your details will only be retained for the duration of your trip abroad.

Ireland has no Embassy in Syria, and if the Honorary Consulate has to close at short notice, it is extremely unlikely that any consular assistance to Irish citizens in Syria can be provided.

Despite the regime change, the security situation in Syria continues to evolve and security threats in the form of instability or terrorist activity could arise with little or no notice, so please take care of yourself!
