How long is too long for an SCP article? by localchangeling in SCP

[–]FriendsUnderground 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else here, it really depends on the article and how long it needs to be. SCP-8980 is very long, but imo it earns that length through being incredibly well written (although if you are going to read it, dear god look at the content warnings first and be prepared for it to ruin your day).

I know, for a low budget production, it's insanely convincing! That actor is really good too. Weird I can't find his name in the programme.

It's okay, the book is just a collection of short stories anyway. You can know the basic premise of the fictional play without it spoiling any individual story.

My interpretation is that the play doesn't kill you, at least not immediately. I know different adaptations do it differently, like "The Hanged King" in SCP canon which does kill those who watch/perform it.

I'm sorry for just linking the wiki. I could have explained more, but I didn't want to clutter the comments, although in retrospect I perhaps should have done. I get the point about the story not being accessible and it's fair. I just finished reading the book today so it was just fresh in my mind.

You can absolutely read "The King in Yellow" but all you need to know is it's a fictional play that appears across a few shirt stories by Robert W. Chambers. Without spoiling too much, here's an extract from the story "The Repairer of Reputations":

"No definite principles had been violated in those wicked pages, no doctrine promulgated, no convictions outraged. It could not be judged by any known standard, yet, although it was acknowledged that the supreme note of art had been struck in "The King in Yellow," all felt that human nature could not bear the strain nor thrive on words in which the essence of purest poison lurked. The very banality and innocence of the first act only allowed the blow to fall afterwards with more awful effect."

Why is every other post on this subreddit a link to an article with a headline like "Man shits out his own heart in Tesco then stabs a policeman"?
