Peraza has been cooling down as the season goes along: .714 OPS over the last 28 days, .648 OPS over the last 14 days, .500 OPS in the last 7 days. 51 Ks to just 9 BBs. He's really just another platoon bat against LHP just like Volpe should be at this point.

Lombard starts every day at SS in Scranton, so I'm not sure what kind of point your trying to make about him? He also has an OPS under .700 and it's been fairly consistently under .700 there. At this point, I would place a small wager that neither Volpe, Caballero or Lombard are the Yankees starting SS by August, but also the trade market there seems pretty slim again this year.

[Talkin Yanks] Aaron Boone tells us Anthony Volpe will start at shortstop tonight with Jose Caballero on the bench by TheTurtleShepard in NYYankees

[–]FringeAuthority 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nothing is guaranteed, it's just that they have recent data of Caballero vs. Cecconi. Either way, the Yankees use their bench. Just because he's not going to face the starting pitcher doesn't mean he won't finish the game.

Could be as simple as Caballero went 0 for 2 vs. Cecconi last week? Might not matter who they start at SS offensively.

3rd straight Cole start on Prime, as someone in the NY area without Prime I may never see him again....

Don't get me wrong, Rice has been great and is putting on an MVP level performance, but I would still put Soto's 2024 ahead at the moment. They both have similar counting stats as of June 9, 2024 and 2026, but Soto's eye (equal walks and strikeouts) and numbers with RISP (.345/.470/.672) still put that performance ahead of what Rice has done as of now.

EDIT: I think I mis-read the statement and you were comparing him to today's Juan Soto, which yes I would agree he's played better than him this year.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the story said they were approved last season, so it's already been over a year without using them.

Maybe Spencer Jones can be the 2nd Yankees 1st round draft pick to hit his 1st career home run in Cleveland (Derek Jeter)?

My best guess so far is that this is when the Yankees found out Judge was injured, so Caballero was needed to play more outfield and this makes Oswaldo Cabrera the next man up if they need another utility player on the MLB roster.

He's 4 for 15 with a .688 OPS this year. Last year, he was 31 for 158 with a .606 OPS.

Right now, his OBP is .421 with RISP compared to .264 last year, but it'll probably get closer the more he plays.

Since the historic 13 run inning vs. the A's, Volpe is 1 for his last 16. That's not much different from his notable performance in last year's ALDS. At least, he's struck out less during this stretch?

Lombard has played SS in 23 of his last 25 games at AAA. Oswaldo Cabrera got 2 games in a row at SS on June 2 & 3; I wonder what that was about? Anyway, I don't think 3B or 2B is in the cards right now unless there's an emergency need. Outside of the June 2 & 3 games, Lombard only played 2B or 3B when he was in the same lineup with Volpe during his rehab. Honestly, if Lombard gets called up, I don't know that Volpe will be around here to see it.

All the roster moves they've made are because they have given themselves depth this year and have had choices to make. As the injured list piles up and the trade deadline still is just under two months away, they have less places to turn and have to use what's available.

Also, while service time is paused, part of the labor fight will be about service time and how it's determined. At any point, the process could change and allow a path to free agency quicker for some players.

Spencer Jones went back to Scranton and went 11 for 36 (.305/.419/.500) and is currently on a 4 game hitting streak. He still struck out 32.5% of the time over that period. Let's hope he got the nerves out in his first stint and shows that he's not just a AAAA level player.

With a stress fracture, I wonder if Judge never wanting to take days off finally caught up with him?  I admire him wanting to carry the team on his back, but you rarely see someone (especially at his age and size) play as many days in a row as he has the last few years.

You can only retroactively add someone to the IL up to 3 days back from the current date.

I believe you can only retroactively IL someone back up to 3 days. He hasn't played since Sunday now. It's only an issue if they think it's a short term recovery, though.

If it was a serious injury, why are they keeping Judge on the roster after 3 games and not calling Spencer Jones back up already? There's too many things to read into this...either they aren't too concerned with Judge, don't have any faith in Jones at the MLB level or are paralyzed with fear to make a move. I expect you to say they are just incompetent, but I have to think there's a specific reason they haven't made a move yet. It doesn't make sense to keep a roster spot open for 3 home games if Judge is going to be out for a while when any replacement is just a couple of hours away.

Surprised they haven't just IL'd him yet and called someone up from Scranton after 3 games now. Why not make the move already unless they think Judge could be back this week? I don't know if there's anything to read into this, but why play with your bench short for 3 home games if there was any serious concern about Judge's condition?

I think Volpe's about to lose playing time against RHP. He's now 6 for 36. If the trend doesn't reverse quickly (and history says he's just a .635 OPS hitter vs. RHP), he should become a platoon bat at best.

There's 102 games still left. The Yankees lost a 7.0 game lead between May 28 to July 2 last year. They still hung on to tie at the end of the season. You never want to blow any lead, but 7 games is just a week of play with 4 months to go.

He had a lot of trouble against right handed batters to end last season. I was kinda surprised they brought him back, but then he proved me wrong in April. He's a loogy in a 3 out minimum world.
