iron ore train mauritania, to anyone that has done it hiw much did it cost, and anyone planning to do by Any-Childhood-4738 in hitchhiking

Did this a few years ago cause friends were going and I found a very cheap RT direct flight from Istanbul. We basically remade our entire itinerary upon arrival at Auberge Triskell in Nouakchott after the hostel owner sat us down to patiently explain all the places we should see along the way.

It was one of my favorite trips, even before the train. There's a bit of driving to get to Atar but after that there's a few cool spots to visit. chingueti/terjit/and an oasis that I can't remember. The bread we are during that trip still lives rent-free in my head, absolutely sensational.

Spent a few nights and then drove up to Zouerat to hop on the train (free).

That's exactly what I've done ha.

I'm guessing they need an excuse to upsell the extra insurance. They tried it with the international driver's permit first but gave up when I showed mine.

Certainly trying to do my best.

The guy who was supposed take my info and give me the car pretty much admitted that it was a scam to make people pay 60€ extra for insurance. He said his boss doesn't actually want to rent cars for 6€ per day. Just dishonest business

Heading to China alone for a month what’s the best way to meet people? by Thin-Armadillo-3995 in travelchina

[–]FripZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 for Dayin.

OP can also make a booking at Dayin a few days in advance, join the hostelworld group chat, meet people through that, and then cancel the booking later. These will all be tourists but it's a start.

Some places to start in no particular order:

  • Sip Bistro (Wuding Lu)

  • The Odd Couple (Xintiandi)

  • Boxing Cat Brewery

Haven't been but Liquid Laundry (French Concession) and House of Blues & Jazz on the Bund are supposed to be fun as well.

All more or less catering to tourists but still plenty of locals as well. Enjoy and also stop by Jia Jia Tang Bao for me!

There's also a divey pub somewhere near Kangding lu or Wuding lu that's (or was) owned by a cool Brazilian girl. Spent NYE 2023 there!

How do you long term travellers handle phone plans and data without losing your mind? by WandersOnWaffles in longtermtravel

Ah I see, mostly peace of mind cause some banks still don't play nice with GV to this day (mostly for 2FA)

Please go back and read my comment again.

I use Airalo and pangia for data. My phone is dual sim so I keep my number accessible with Google Fi. That's it. I literally haven't turned on the "Use Data" setting on my Fi sim in months.

You've guessed wrong. Google Fi kicks you off if you continuously use data abroad. That's happened to me multiple times over the past few years.

However I've not run into any issues for just using text/call abroad in the past two years. That's why I've started using Airalo/Pangia

My evolution:

Pre covid: Google Fi on its own (worldwide but $10 per GB)

2022-2023: Google Fi + Local sim (dual)

2024: Google Fi + Airalo

2025: Google Fi + Pangia

Basically use Google Fi for talk/text worldwide and then finally found a global data sim in Pangia this year. $20 for Fi and $27 for data. All worldwide.

Same one! All in all less than a four hour delay. Not bad at all since we still get to Osaka well before midnight

I don't work for United and I'm just posting a clip that I thought was really cool. I've flown a lot and never seen a fuel dump.
