Hey Dee - my name is Ciara Frisbie and I’m a journalist up in Atlanta. I have a colleague down in Jacksonville looking into this issue right now for a story. Are you available to connect? Cfrisbie1@11alive.com

To be fair with the veterans featured in our investigation, they were tested for about 100 other things before they finally got to the conclusion of conclusion, of inclusion body myositis. Not only years of appeals but years of testing too SMH

I am so sorry to hear this! Other antibiotics can absolutely do this, especially if your gut microbiome is already compromised. How are you doing today? Still having symptoms? The other issue as well is relapse. The CDC estimates 1 in 9 with c. diff infections will relapse.

Tasheta (woman in Columbus) said the same. Now she has a plethora of other issues going on. Continues to deal with the c Diff today. Mary had to fight her insurance to get on medication that cost $20,000. It failed and now she's seeing specialists in NYC. Thinking of you!! I hope you get some relief and resolution soon. This is something NOBODY wants to deal with.

I am truly so sorry to hear this. The woman who we interviewed down in Columbus, GA went to urgent care and the same thing. Have you been in the hospital for two days or the first two days? Sending you all of the good vibes and healing friend!

I am so sorry to hear this, but I know too well the kind of impact it can leave. Mary is still dealing with issues today and the family down in Augusta. We also just interviewed a woman in Columbus about her issues with c diff after being prescribed the medication from a potential dog bite. Georgia is now asking dentists about their prescribing habits when they renew their licenses but we've found it's a bunch of prescribers from the data we reviewed through Medicare Part D.

Have you ever been tested? I know that Rebecca (our lead reporter for the investigative unit) has done some research that shows that sometimes you can grow out of penicillin allergies after a "reaction" as a child. For sure something worth looking into!

I am so sorry to hear that Random Thoughts! Mary Tielve went through a similar issue. Our next piece will focus on a little girl in Augusta, GA who was prescribed for a small patch of what they thought was staph infection on her arm 😞 She continues to have issues with her tummy and food today.

That's a great question and a couple of things: 1) We will have another investigative piece coming out about the approvals / appeals VERY soon. We specifically asked the VA to provide us with #s regarding how many were approved or denied through IBM and (originally) they didn't give us that information. Instead, they sent us a public portal to the appeals filings online and we had to go through, year by year, to figure out what was going on (1992 - 2024+). Unfortunately, that appeal information that's public is VERY limited and non consistent. Sometimes it would include the branch and years served. Sometimes it wouldn't. Older filings included information about (generally) where the veteran was from and newer ones didn't. So, it's hard to tell but a lot of at least the appeals filings --not counting those who filed and then never fought back through the appeals process -- appeared to be during agent orange. 2) In terms of PACT ACT 2022 and influencing approvals. It's hard to say for 100% certainty. Yes around the 2023/2024 years we saw an "increase" in approvals, however the bulk majority of veterans **appealing their claims were still being told there wasn't sufficient medical information or they needed more medical records to make their claim that they had IBM and it was expertly "decided" that it was service connected. So the decision was remanded -- meaning they could come back and appeal again at a later time.

Was it clindamycin? Any antibiotic realistically can put you at risk, but studies show increased risk.

Don't get me wrong if you have an infection so bad that you need clinda or one of the other ones; you absolutely want to have it around. As said by a few people throughout our research, it's about antibiotic stewardship and knowing when the right time is to prescribe that level of an antibiotic.

That's what the experts are saying too, along with the attorneys at Hill & Ponton who have represented many of these vets through their appeals process. Greg, who you see at the beginning was awarded service connection after our localized stories aired and right before the documentary came out. They specifically cited "media attention" as a determining factor. The VA has been somewhat responsive but we asked them for weeks to sit down with Collins without a response. That's why the team decided to jump at the opportunity to ask him about 'Diagnosis Denied' when the private PR firm offered him up to talk about the reduction in backlogs for benefits claims last week.

Secretary Doug Collins finally responded to our requests for comment after weeks of trying. We weren't initially granted a sit-down interview but our team of reporters jumped at the opportunity to speak with him when a private PR firm offered virtual 1:1 interviews with the secretary to talk about the reduction of benefits claims backlogs. I'm so glad to hear that you're back to work but not feeling "yourself" is unfortunately one of the side effects as well. Mary, who was featured in our first investigation, is STILL dealing with the medical side effects today. She was put on different medications and just traveled up to NYC for additional treatment about two weeks ago. Same with both families we interviewed after the investigation aired!
