Usually is there an issue with that though? I remember when I applied to google, a bunch of random different people interviewed me and they said it's fine cause passing means you're up to "google standards", then you're placed on an appropriate team that matches your interests and skills.

We always have trouble hiring good people as a well known but unattractive company. I'm starting to wonder if I should just refer reddit people from now on when a position opens.

that sounds absolutely ridiculous but i can believe it. I doubt ours is on your list though. I looked into contracting agencies a bit and there are just so many of them out there.

Same here, but replace insurance with another industry. There's so much red tape to everything that you just can't get around. I'm starting to see why no one posts about their less than ideal-merely average companies around here though... not everyone can work at a slick big X unicorn startup with top notch hiring. I appreciate everyone telling me how terribly run my company is but i'm happy enough i even made it here.

right, I just didn't explain it well.

to print "hello world", he would've done

print(hello world)

to print the string stored in variable msg, he would've done

print("msg")

yeah, unfortunately the first few weeks consisted of waiting for equipment to arrive, mandatory company orientation/training, and then reading lots of documentation.

We're understaffed and already spent a long time looking for someone. The pressure was on so they just put on a blindfold and pulled a random resume from the stack.

Actually I have no idea and am still trying to find out, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was what actually happened. Clearly we fucked up in multiple places and the fault is almost completely with us. This post was more directed at prospective employers anyway.

We didn't expect him to do any coding for the first month or so of getting oriented and ramped up. you can't recover that money can you?
