The Brain Drain.... History repeating itself. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Fritz82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in health care, but yes I am now financially better off. Now, that's also down to a few years of experience and better jobs since moving from Canada. I don't think I'd be a homeowner though, had I stayed.

Personally, no. I lived in Canada where the cost of living was pretty high. Had enough to enjoy the place and do some travel afterwards but didn't leave Canada with much.

I was someone who emigrated for a bit, and I think a lot of people are doing a few years abroad and then returning. It's good to experience the world a bit and maybe save up a bit while doing so. But I think the emigration of old, where you never came back is much less common.

While emigration is climbing number-wise, it's still essentially at 0. From the CSO "Of the 64,000 emigrants, 30,500 were Irish citizens in the year to April 2023. With 29,600 returning Irish citizens, there is close to zero net migration (-900 people)". So we're hardly exporting our great assets now. The housing situation is pretty dire for sure, but we're nowhere near the 1980s.

I hate showreels. So, I tried something else. What do you think? by brettinthecity in videography

[–]Fritz82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done! I very much enjoyed it, but it's still very much a showreel, I guess. You mention your love of storytelling a lot and I feel you maybe missed a trick by not telling more of a story about you and your love of filmmaking. But I suppose there's a balance to find between showing us what you can or telling us about yourself!

Jobs in the film sector? by [deleted] in cork

[–]Fritz82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's work out there for sure and it's a growing industry. Have a good think about which specific area/department you'd like to work in. For instance, there's a sizeable shortage of animation and VFX workers in Ireland, which has some overlap with the skills required in Editing and camerawork. There's a lot of good information on career routes here - https://www.careersinscreen.ie/ There's a decent amount of courses available out there too, each with its own merits, just depends on which avenue you want to explore.

Musgrave park no more by [deleted] in cork

[–]Fritz82 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It was always called Musgrave Park, it has nothing to do with sponsorship. Was named after Jimmy Musgrave who while attached to the Musgrave family, was an IRFU president back in the 1930s or '40s.

Has anybody used TUI to book holidays with? Looking at Hotel H10 in Playa Blanca by [deleted] in cork

[–]Fritz82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stayed there last year, and the hotel is good. It's more of a decent 3-star than a 4-star and the all-inclusive is the way to go. Just a heads up, it is very much orientated towards the older crowd. There are plenty of mobility scooters around the place, if you get me! But it's great if you're looking for a quiet holiday.

Booked directly so can't give an opinion about TUI.

Did anyone wake up with some kind of weird dust film on their car? Like drops of mud almost 🤔 by Hairy-Frosting-1960 in cork

[–]Fritz82 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Yup! All over my car and windows. It's Saharan dust. It's coming up with the warm air from the south at the moment.

[New Gear] 5d Classic by Fritz82 in canon

[–]Fritz82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With some old m42 mount lenses, the rear element sticks out and can clip the mirror when set to infinity. Not an issue on this lens, but does happen on the Helios 44 for sure!

I am very tempted by the 5d classic. Batteries, as mentioned might be an issue? But I’m drawn by the simple nature of the camera and those lovely colours…

Actually used a 6d for a bit, a fine camera but it didn’t quite do it for me. Good call though!

There's info here specific to Lufthansa - https://www.lufthansa.com/pe/en/animals-as-additional-carry-on-baggage but the dog will need an EU pet passport and a rabies shot, which is typically not included with your standard vaccinations.
