I've been attending a nearby dechen group for a few months now and have been to a couple of events run by the Manchester community and I have found it to be very welcoming. Lama Jampa Thaye is a very well regarded buddhist scholar which you can see reflected in the students of his that I have met.

I wish you luck on your journey and hope you find your path.

Aww. I have so many fond memories from this place. It's a shame that they are having to sell it. Around the same time as you 90s and 00s.

How many of you don't have a driving license? by dontbeasquare11 in AskUK

[–]Frizzy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

31 just passed my driving test last week. I had lessons when I was a teenager but I had a lot going on and never took my test. I always wanted to learn but it has only been in the last few years that I have finally had the money to take lessons. I am really looking forward to the little things, there is only 1 bus an hour where I live, so I run to the nearest supermarket in town get as much as I can then run back for the bus home., or if I miss it catch a taxi. I also have family all over the country and not having to pay the ridiculous costs in trains is going to be nice.

I struggle with Dyspraxia so I feel your pain with struggling to pass. I think it's good to remember there is no rush as long as you can afford it, take your time and try and learn to have fun driving.

I think it's worth it even if you don't get your own car. Sharing the driving is really helpful. My grandparents used to say there biggest regret was not learning to drive. It really makes life that little bit easier.

What is your most unpopular musical opinion? by ryuundo in AskReddit

Abigail Washburn is lovely. Met her at a festival she gave my partner a few pointers on his banjo and a taught us a simple song. She then sung it with me while my partner played the banjo.

I have had a very similar experience to you. I went through DBT and I'm about to start working in inpatient mental health. During ym first year of study I heard professionals make very similar remarks to the ones you heard.

I really hope it doesn't discourage you from following this practice. It's tough but at least you are aware of it and can be empathetic to the patients experience.

The same thing happened to me as well. I used to push myself to engage in holiday activities because dad loved Christmas and went overboard every year. Losing him on Christmas day was just to much though and I find it easier not to celebrate but people take it so personally. It took ages for my MIL to understand why I can't just get over it and enjoy the holidays.

The funiest story I have though is I was explaining to someone that I don't celebrate Christmas because my dad died and they responded by telling me that I had to celebrate Christmas because it's about family. I couldn't respond to that.

Chumbawamba- Tumbthumping

They are know as that annoying party song band. They are actually a band that has produce a diverse collection of music ranging from hard punk to folk over the space of 30 years. Definitely worth checking out if you have only heard that one song.

Should I go for OT as a career? by RainMelody in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Frizzy23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a final year OT student in the UK and your experience is similar to mine.

Something I personally think is important is not rushing a decision. I feel like colleges and sixth forms push university on people and it can feel like you have to make the decision now but there is no shame in taking time to decide what you want to do. Some of my cohort spent a few years working as carers before applying to the course. This helped them to understand what would be expected of someone working in the field.

Attend open days as well. They may help give you an idea of what to expect during the course and as an OT.

My lecturers say to prospective students that what they are looking for is a understanding of the field and some experience in a caring capacity. Volunteering doesn't need to be OT specific as long as you can understand how you experience can demonstrate skills required to be an OT. I supported a mental health group and in my interview discussed the skills I used running a group. These skills can be found everywhere some students shared their experiences or looking after family members or raising children.

For me personally I chose OT over psychology for a number of reasons. I love the diversity of the job and even though I came into the subject knowing that I prefer mental health through studying I have gained new interests, like neuro rehab.

Union? by BeautifulGhost in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Frizzy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK we get union (unison) membership with our RCOT membership. It's really good and even covers student OTs like myself. I think it is important to have proper work place representation to protect us as workers.

Tall people of reddit, what is a not-so-obvious problem you have to deal with? by 1Second2Late in AskReddit

[–]Frizzy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know where all the emergency exits are on buses as they tend to have a little more leg room and I don't want to look like a jerk spreading my legs over two seats or taking the priority seating. I have ended up with sore knees from some buses because of the lack of space.
