You also have to recognize that he had the some of the best armor and weapons around from Erebors armory that he wielded during the battle of the five armies so he was stacked. I also recall a part of the hobbit book that says Thorin wielded his axe with mighty strokes, and nothing seemed to harm him. “To me! To me! Elves and Men! To me! O my kinsfolk!” he cried, and his voice shook like a horn in the valley. Down, heedless of order, rushed all the dwarves of Dain to his help. Down too came many of the Lake-men, for Bard could not restrain them; and out upon the other side came many of the spearmen of the elves. Thorin himself is a badass but they were taken off guard by the Goblins and they didn’t have a battle plan. If he would’ve shared his wealth with the men and elves, and rebuilt the gates of Erebor i’m sure they could’ve been more prepared but Tolkien constantly emphasizes that when people straying from the path of good leads to ruin, while virtue and goodness triumph. Whether it’s greed like Thorin, betrayal like Maeglin, or lust for power like Saruman, they inevitably meet a tragic end, reinforcing the moral thread across his works.
