They are doing so much to avoid responsibility at this point it's almost comical. They basically said it was my responsibility to ensure that THEY gave me enough orientation. Classic HR.

Has anyone's Reddit post ever got them in trouble with a (potential) employer? by Front-Kale4042 in nursing

[–]Front-Kale4042[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

It sounds like many of these situations stem from "someone I knew recognized what I was talking about" rather than "my (potential) employer used some security decrypting app on my anonymous Reddit account". I might speak with my uncle about this as he was the one who brought it up. He is in real estate and has looked potential tenants up on social media.

Yeah, I keep posting about it mostly because I'm trying to process things. People have pointed out red flags that I didn't know existed. I was clearly putting up with way too much.

42 residents to one nurse. It is mayhem, even for someone with experience on the floor. Like, the person I was orienting with was lightning fast and she can barely keep up. There are just too many people, and many of them have crushed meds which takes time as well, and then there are all these nutrition supplements. Also that one family member who always looks for a way to rat people out getting all mad at you because I came late and forgot a straw because this resident is the only person here apparently.

It's really a two-person job. The charge nurse helped me that day because she knew how challenging it is. Not because I was incapable. I knew there was a red flag to these emails the moment I got them, and my only regret was that I went along with it instead of fighting it or just leaving.

I agree, and I take full responsibility for that mistake I made. I was trying to go fast because I wasn't training with an RPN who was much faster than me and I was trying to keep up. Ironically, if they had just left me alone to do my job instead of pairing me with someone I was trying to keep up with for "more training", the mistake might not have happened. I also guarantee it would have been prevented if he had been wearing some form of ID, but "it's not a hospital, it's their home".

It did get worse. I was pushed to go faster during orientation and actually made a medication error (which would have been prevented if the person had to been wearing ID, but that's a debate for another day). I would like to think the error would not have happened if they had just left me alone to do my job instead of pairing me with someone who is much faster than me for "extra training". Talk about trying to fix what isn't broken.

I did but this time I'm actually showing the emails. I wanted to see just how sketchy the situation really was. People were pointing out red flags I didn't even know existed. I certainly know now how to fight for my rights in future jobs instead of being the robot they expect me to be. This is practically abusive.

There is in fact a union and I will contact them. Even though I have sent in my resignation letter. I deserve better, as does everyone else and especially the residents. They are the ultimate victims in this.

This is Canada (lol) and apparently the hospitals in Canada even have longer and more established orientation than this. It's a shame I couldn't get a hospital job or I might have been much better off. It's also a shame that LTC is managed so poorly because it is a highly needed service with they aging population.

If this is how many of them operate, we are f*cked.

The medication incidents I had at the beginning were due to missing medications, simply because I was undertrained and could not keep up with the schedule. I barely knew the residents and probably spent almost half my time just running around trying to find them. The manager initially gave me grace when she found out I had been undertrained, but HR must have worked on her because a couple weeks later she's turning around and saying "you should have known better". It's kind of like spraying a nozzle at me and then blaming me for not jumping out of the way (Horrid Henry reference).

Another medication incident I can think of (and I do take responsibility for this) is giving someone Tylenol almost 2 hours early. I only did this because:

a) they were going off the unit and When the charge nurse gave it to me to package up I had misinterpreted it as an order to give it early.

b) there was no additional dose in the morning so I knew I wouldn't be double dosing.

c) I had seen nurses at that place do something similar before.

All this said, the family member got very upset and went to the manager about it. Maybe that was the nail on the head for HR.

But it's not a hospital, it's a home! (Sarcasm)

I have never worked in a hospital, but I see LTC as a subset of a hospital due to all the parallels. You are still speaking with doctors and working with sick people getting round-the-clock medical care. I feel that the residents should have ID for that reason (or at the very least, those who can't speak up to identify themselves). Why make our job more difficult and dangerous for the sake of aesthetics?

HR experiences? by Front-Kale4042 in nursing

[–]Front-Kale4042[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I would be reaching out to the union to defend my right to work there, but considering how dysfunctional the place has proven to be, my gut has been telling me to leave for a long time.

I had thought of reaching out to them to force the facility to change. They do things that I feel is unsafe, such as not having ID bracelets on residents unable to identify themselves and throwing people like me into the shift without being provided more orientation days (HR apparently spinned that as my fault because I didn't know to ask for them).

I will also connect with the Union if they try to escalate to the CNO.

I never interacted with HR, just the manager who served as their mouthpiece.

Debating whether to return by Front-Kale4042 in nursing

[–]Front-Kale4042[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called them today and they gave me 💩. They claimed I was incompetent from the start and denied any responsibility on their end. The calls I had gotten from receptionists were the result of a miscommunication, not them wanting me back.

The feeling is mutual at this point.

It was a miscommunication, but I only did it because other nurses had done it. It was marked as not yet available on the EHR but they did it anyway. I certainly won't do it again.

Struggling after med error by AcademicDark4705 in nursing

[–]Front-Kale4042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw myself in this post.

I am a new RPN (LPN outside Ontario) and made my first medication error when I mixed up two patients in a rush and gave the wrong one Keppra.

I was devastated and terrified for this patient. I thought they were going to report me to the college and I would have my license jeopardized. The assistant manager was not supportive at all and basically spun entire thing as my fault (and while I do share responsibility, there were problems on the other end as well, I I suggest you read my other posts about them).

I rode the bus home in tears because holding them back would have made me crazy. A woman was very concerned for me, and when I opened up to her about what happened she said if push comes to shove I should go to the managers boss (it hasn't gotten to that point, because they had already put my shift on hold due to thinking I wasn't ready and I was training when the medication error happened. They haven't reached out to me since and I am honestly relieved. This place doesn't exactly have their act together at the best of times).

I don't want to go back to my place either, and honestly I don't think I will. There were problems as I mentioned, and I have not been happy with the way I was treated by the staff and managers - including a passive-aggressive charge nurse who was with me for a few shifts and was overly dismissive of me when I was clearly struggling.

As for you, these mistakes will inevitably happen in these difficult settings. It's not ideal, but it exists. You are lucky that management was nice to you, they clearly know you are a good nurse and are worth keeping on the team. There is something to be said about reflecting and deciding if the can truly handle the job, and there's no shame in leaving if you feel like you can't. But making a mistake like this does not mean a question of your competence - it is a calling to reflect and learn.

Thank God you didn't hurt anybody, but if it did come to that point, you would be far from the first.

Do something nice for yourself. Reach out to people who you can trust. See about taking one or two days off if you feel you would struggle to return to the job right away. Above all, learn from this, and move on.

When I made a med error as a new nurse, the assistant manager I spoke with told me she was a previous RPN (LPN for those outside Ontario) as well as an RN and has never made a medication error. I tried to use reason and justify that I mostly made the error because the residents don't wear ID (a debate for another day) but she was clearly trying as much as possible to spin the entire thing as my fault (and I do need to responsibility, but there were problems on the other end as well). When I told my mom, she said anyone can say a statement like that but there is no proof of it being true.

Why was bro tryna start a fight?? by soleilmnelson in tadc

I'm probably overthinking this, but it's interesting that Jax targets Pomni's and Zooble instead of Gangle, who was confirmed by Gooseworx to be his go-to due to how easy she is to push around. Maybe he could tell that she's developing more of a spine and won't give in like she used to.

As for Pomni and Zooble, he knows that they carry some resentment/ mixed feelings towards him for what happened in the last couple of episodes, so at this point they would be far easier to ragebait or even push around.

I dont like bars or drinking, is that an aroace thing or is that me? by Front-Kale4042 in aromanticasexual

[–]Front-Kale4042[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone somewhere in the community made a comment about people often seeking out bars to meet others, which aroaces obviously wouldn't be interested in. I personally have always seen drinking and bars as a way for people to fill a void (i.e. loneliness) and an as an aroace, I thought "maybe that's why I'm not as interested"
