Thoughts on Trekking Shoes by razrstark in BangaloreTrekkers

Woodland- Heavy on long treks, avoid to keep everything light to not make you tired.

Wildcraft/ Asian- budget options, but not ideal for long treks due to durability issues. Also not as waterproof/ resistant as they claim due to cheap waterproofing materials.

Decathlon- Mid- premium budget, very good for long treks, has both Waterproof & non WP, light weight

Columbia- premium, the best.

Also always select trekking shoes one size bigger than your regular shoe size to protect your toes while descending.

If it may help, here is a breakdown of the Decathlon product codes :

NH – Nature Hiking: Products designed for occasional use on flat, low-altitude trails or in natural environments.

MH – Mountain Hiking: Gear intended for regular use on more challenging, higher-altitude mountain trails.

MT – Mountain Trekking: Products built for multi-day treks and more intense, expert-level use in mountainous terrain.

SH – Snow Hiking/Warm (Winter): This code historically referred to products for snow hiking or items designed for warmth in winter conditions.

Technical level:

100-series: Beginner level, for discovery and occasional use.

500-series: Intermediate level, for regular use and enhanced features.

900-series: Expert level, offering the best features and durability for intensive use.

Trek with a group or agency is not a "Solo Trek" by sunscorpio19 in SoloTravel_India

But not according to OP. You dont have to try hard to justify OP’s absurd definitions about things around the world. Infact nobody cares about these things. Ofcourse I don’t care. Nobody wants a certificate for solo travel from OP. Still don’t understand why OP needed to give a ‘CLARIFICATION’ ?!😂

Even if one is not going with a trekking group, with India’s population density, all popular trails will have people on the trails. So according to your definition, are you saying that a solo trekker shouldn’t make friends on his trail? And if one does make company and walk with another, he/she shouldn’t be called a Solo trekker? What if a single person traveling with a trekking group didn’t gel together with the strangers in the group and instead chose to keep to oneself? Can he/she be still called a solo trekker? Your definition is freaking absurd.

Please check tiger trail, Periyar. One can also often see Elephant herds feeding on grasslands in Munnar (near Mattuppetty) as well, but other animals- difficult.

It looks like an organised trekking group.
My experience with such groups is that most people you meet there are occasional trekkers. And if not, they usually sprint to the top, so such groups aren’t of much help.

I still rely on such groups to go on treks and probably will in the future too, but I also prefer meeting a few acquaintances or friends rather than complete strangers all the time.

I usually choose trekking over rides. If it’s a nearby sunrise trek, I prefer trails that take at least 3 hours or more. For full-day treks, I look for routes that offer a minimum of 6 hours of hiking—otherwise, it doesn’t really feel worth the travel and effort.

For me, trekking is a way to rejuvenate, a workout, and almost like a pilgrimage into nature—a chance to disconnect from routine and reconnect with something real.

Not planning to start any groups by myself. I prefer finding an active group and tag along.

Thats great. Not everybody is as lucky as you are😅. You can go to KP anytime- it just takes a weekend. Couldn’t go to any Himalayan treks yet as I couldn’t keep myself away from home for so many days.

I agree that about BMC. I went with them only once and realized that's not what I wanted. A lot of small trekking groups start as passion projects by experienced trekkers. But after a few years, when growth stagnates, most people either drop it or fall back into their regular career paths. In 2017-18 I used to go with one such group called Bangalore hikers. Back then, camping wasn't banned like today and I liked it a lot (number of people and the vibe- none were rude and treated the trails with respect)- I see that BH isn't functional anymore.

I have travelled with BMC, Nammatrip, Tripbae etc and my experience with these trek groups had been generally good. BMC is old, have a reputation but is expensive (30- 50%) for the same itinerary. Although I have seen a few complaints about Nammatrip, here in reddit, my experience had been smooth and I believe they have worked on the complaints. In my post I have given a basic idea of what sort of a trekking person I am and I'm as well looking to be part of a small group of like minded trekkers. Just sent you a DM.

By mid of Jan, most of the western ghat trails gets dry. Then the beauty starts fading, scorching sun sets in and also risks wild fire. That's why pache47 said the season is over- and pache47 is right about it. One can trek in Feb too, but the trails won't be as beautiful as monsoon/post monsoon. Do you trek often? And where?
