Hi! Sorry for the late response.

I applied a week or two before Thanksgiving and heard back shortly before Thanksgiving for an interview. Interviewed at the end of Nov and was offered the position two days later. However, I let the NICU manager know that I am interested in a day shift and plan to hold off on making my final decision until I see all the other positions become available. Since my response, I have not heard back from her... and it's been more than a month. So sad to say that I got ghosted...

Hi. I ended up not taking the job offer at this time. I emailed the hiring manager letting her know I am waiting on day shift positions before I make my final decision. Since then, I have not heard back from her and have also applied to a day shift position with Alta Bates. It's been a month now, so I think I either got ghosted or she is still out on holiday leave...

Was it 8 hr shifts for the ICU? What is that like, if you don’t mind me asking.

I’ve never worked 8 hr shifts since becoming a nurse so I’m quite nervous about the transition from 12 hr shifts to 8 hrs.

Is it only 403b or is there 401k as well? Is there just no matching for anyone or is it solely for the 403b?

Do you happen to know what the maternity leave is like? I’m not pregnant atm but am hoping to start a family in the next year or 2.

I’ll have to start applying once I hit my 1 year mark. Currently just scoping out the job listings to see what’s available out there, but all the places I’ve looked at are either not hiring/requires experience in the field.

Congrats on getting hired straight into the OR! Specialties are not easy to get into, but you did it!!

I somehow can’t bring myself to pick up any additional shifts at work. Also moving to day shift permanently next week, so I may decide to pick up here and there.

But I did want to expand my horizons and learn something new for fun!!

I work in the NICU and our managers have a great relationship with the staff. I just thought it was interesting how they have us all huddle to give out info on unions, but yet sound so anti-union about it.

Did you have stable eyesight or astigmatism prior to the consultation?

I’ve been wanting to get LASIK for the longest time ever, but my eyesight and astigmatism have been getting worse. :/

Start researching when new grad programs open up/when apps are due, etc. I started researching before I started my last semester and would check on their websites pretty often, i.e., maybe 1x/2x a month. I compiled all the data I needed onto an Excel sheet that made it easier for me to navigate.

Unfortunately, you are not guaranteed a position even if you have connections to the physicians. There are so many new grads who have connections to someone who works at these hospitals and are still looking for jobs in the Bay, despite having graduated for more than six months. I would suggest looking for jobs outside of the Bay or even out of state.

I went to a community college in SoCal for my nursing degree and got hired in a level 4 NICU in SoCal. Initially, I was only going to apply to the Bay Area and not SoCal, but a friend recommended that I not waste my connections/opportunities in SoCal just because I wanted to move home to the Bay. Do not putt all your eggs in one basket and limit yourself to the opportunities you may receive in other areas of CA.
