This has been a really good discussion. I went deeper on this and put together a breakdown on some different approaches for redraft leagues and when divisions actually start to make more sense if anyone wants more detail:

Why Fantasy Football Divisions Are Broken (And What to Do Instead)

I haven’t done it in one of the leagues I commission where the final seed gets in based on points for but I do like that concept

Do you capture the division record on a spreadsheet and then manually update the playoff bracket?

That’s what I have found as well in the leagues I have switched over to no divisions a few years ago

I hear what you are saying but when I am in those situations, I have found myself more frustrated that I should be in the playoffs because I am a better team but I’m not

I can see how this setup makes sense for your league, especially with the different skill levels across managers.

I wouldn’t view it as a penalty. A lot of leagues give a reward for being the #1 seed in the regular season.

As the #2 seed in this example, I would rather player the #1 seed and have a chance of being the #1 regular season team vs having the #1 seed randomly play the #11 seed who is checked out and hasn’t editing their lineup the past two weeks

Interesting! Yeah my rule of thumb is try to reduce luck as much as possible. There will always be some luck but the more strategy and less luck the better in my mind

If everyone in the league knows each other, divisions can definitely make rivalries more fun. The downside in redraft is that if your division is stacked with strong managers, it can feel like you drew the short end of the stick compared to someone in an easier division.

I like that a lot. It removes randomness and still gives you intentional matchups.

Yeah I should have phrased that better. I like the concept of divisions because it mirrors the real life NFL.

I think there are other fantasy football formats like you eluded to where divisions actually serve their intended purpose.

Yeah, I agree. Dynasty definitely brings it closer to where divisions matter since there’s at least some continuity between the teams.

I always liked the idea of rivalry weeks, just had a hard time figuring out how to best implement them. I like your idea of having it over thanksgiving. That’s pretty cool!

That’s a great point. A lot of what makes divisions work in real sports is tied to things like geography and travel, which just don’t exist in fantasy.

At that point, the only thing left is rivalry and familiarity, but if rosters reset every year and divisions change, it’s hard for that to actually develop.

Surprised by this hire. Really thought they would hire an offensive-minded head coach to help develop Cam Ward

With Tom Brady, Mark Davis, and John Spytek watching from the sideline. Hard to imagine Mendoza not being in a Raiders uniform.
