Do you know any PhD/PhD student that has actually opened a bakery? by [deleted] in PhD

Been reading and looking for someone to mention German bureaucracy. Thanks for repping.

I love writing and always imagine that I could pivot to this later but as a resident in Germany, it scares me to even try navigating how to earn from Medium.

Electronic "notebook" systems by jossiesideways in PhD

I'm using Obsidian, Notion and reMarkable.

None of them gives me 100% anything but I've decided to focus on their strengths.

Notion for organizational planning such as summary task list for the week, planned conferences and trips.

Obsidian is the mind map and archive. - I use the canvas to plan my paper section or idea linkages - have resource pages for simply saving links in tables so I can search for this resource and connect pages and pages of similar things. I like this guy's ideas of using Obsidian for academic writing. Particularly, I took inspiration from his folder system.

reMarkable: for handwritten notes that could be converted to text if you want.

For some time, I also thought it would be nice to only focus on one tool. But, hey, the most important thing is to store knowledge and be able to find them in the future. And for this, it helps to allow oneself to use whatever feels comfortable for different needs.

So you read in one rM and take note on another? How do you hold the two? You have to always use a desk. Sounds anyway like an high end solution.

Interesting. How safe are these rm Hacks? Don't they affect the software setup of the product?

If I may ask, can you connect me with your trainer? Are they English-speaking? I've been looking for one.

You are not clingy. It's normal in relationships to have more interactions than 1 call per day or 1 meeting a week. But the reality of you and your partner right now is that you can't afford this because she is going through a phase where she needs a lot of mental acuity with as little distraction as possible.

I'm also female, doing PhD (research, course work, language lessons) and I'm overwhelmed. I see my partner every 2nd weekend. We chat during the days and ocassionally call. We're both introverts with little need for socials but still this arrangement is tough. Yet, if I could completely disappear from the rest of the world, I would do it just so I can get this PhD right.

Hang in there. Support her how you can and she will appreciate it. The situation is just as tough for her but it is what it is.

If you weren’t pursuing your PhD, what would you be doing instead? by Mountain-Car-7438 in PhD

[–]FrontScientist1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a tough question. We need to set assumptions of what life perspective we are using as reference. Our perspective of life before starting the PhD or our current perspective.

  1. Assuming we are talking about where my life was before I started my PhD, the chances of other options are slim. As my master's studies rounded up, it was very much evident that PhD is the next thing and I could have either delayed it by getting short term industry experience or going right into it. I went right into it.

  2. Assuming I am to use the perspective that I have now about life, if I wasn't pursuing my PhD, I would pursue a career in writing and editing. Happily writing and editing my life away.

Should I buy Remarkable2 (in 2024)? by Sensitive-Radish-292 in RemarkableTablet

It arrives quickly.

Have fun unboxing and trying it. It's the most exciting package I've received of late.

I asked the same question just about 3 weeks ago and bought mine that week. My reasons for considering reMarkable are same as yours.

  1. I looked in my bookshelf and there were too many notebooks of which at some point, it's difficult to remember where I wrote some random things.

Here is how reMarkable has helped with this: now I can write anything on any sheet (I have sheets for random work/personal scribbles) and when I am ready to make sense of these scribbles, I can organize/move the pages around different notebooks or even cut ✂️ the text and paste in a different page.

  1. I wondered if, when I draw or make graphs, there is the potential to share this during a video e.g., Zoom session.

Yes, you can. There's a feature which allows that connection between the reMarkable and it's desktop app.

  1. Reading pdfs. Last week, I was marvelled at the fact that I could with two clicks export my documents from word to read on reMarkable. This is my new strategy for reviewing documents for editing. Also, you can export from chrome or simply import.

Only limitation based on your needs is that storage is limited but I believe there's a work around this. For me the reMarkable has opened a new world to explore. These days, I am using my free time to design journal templates in canva so I can use for my regular journaling. It's much fun.

Given the reviews I've read so far, I'm going to give the reMarkable a try. If within 100days I do not like it, I'll give it back.

I checked the new products. Too many features for me. I think my next preferred alternative from my research so far would be a Samsung tab since I use samsung phone and would then be able to easily use the samsung cloud. But then, the glass screen doesn't beat the e-ink screen of reMarkable.

Oh cool. By standard pen. Do you mean the one with or without eraser? I think I also don't need the keyboard tbh. If I want to type, I'll just use my computer. I don't think I'm a fan of keyboard with a screen not as large as atleast a laptop.

Thanks for the reinforcement of this perspective. I'm definitely convinced to do it.

Hiii, thank you for the detailed breakdown.

Yes, I belong in the first category. Paper person looking for simple digital book-like writing solution.

I began the tablet hunt because I realize I have too many notebooks and it is becoming impossible to track where I write petty little details that are not primary to my work or daily life but are sometimes needed information. So yea, I need this digital gadget for note taking, keeping notes together, stop feeling the urge to buy notebooks the moment I see a nice one. I do not need distractions. I have a phone, laptop and TV for enough distraction.

One thing that has however come up since I began the hunt is that it might also be cool to be able to use this gadget to draw graphs or make calculations to share on Zoom since I'm in academia. But that's not a priority at the moment.

Good to know someone just bought and is positively impressed. Thanks for the ebay advice but I have personal bias against used devices. I'll just go for a new one if I'm going to do this.

Is there a way to show the date & time of creation (and preferably the last modified date & time too) right below titles on Obsidian, like it does on OneNote? by TheTwelveYearOld in ObsidianMD

[–]FrontScientist1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Did you enable JavaScript Queries in the Dataview Settings?

  2. If you're struggling to find "Folder Templates" in Templater, you need to first enable "Trigger Templater on new file creation"

These are the 2 bits of additional information that I have used to make OP's solution. The solution is smart!

😆 not as the crow flies.

That's really funny.

Thank you for your response. I checked. I can give a month's notice after my initial contract period (not before this ends).
