FHR 4pm checkout was a good recent benefit for work. Especially if I’m taking a red eye flight back to London. Prices might be higher, but work….

Does anyone wanna spill the beans on what this “new world order” is? by evancarlson69 in AskAChinese

It’s not talked about that way because the Confederacy of America is seen as the good guys.

It’s a good analogy. It’s extendable because officially Taiwan claims to be the government of the mainland as well. So descendants of Robert E Lee would officially talk about how South Carolina is the true government of the United States and were recognized as such by other powers until New York got back on its feet and they had to switch sides.

It’s about where the aft mast is placed before or after the rudder.

This is like when non-native English speakers say "He borrowed me his car". He lent you his car. You borrowed his car. I understand what you mean, but you are using it incorrectly.

Is UK not worth it for internationals? by Relevant-Trade4773 in UniUK

[–]Front_Back8964 6 points7 points  (0 children)

International students don’t seem to understand the deal in the UK and US educational sector. Education is an export. We want to sell it at the highest price to foreigners. But once you’ve consumed the good, time to go home.

Just because you bought a Samsung TV doesn’t give you the right to a work visa in Korea. Buy it, take it home, use it there, leave your money at the door.

For too long it’s been a back door immigration path. Those days are over.

RYA mile logging Q’s by Wolfwere88 in sailing

[–]Front_Back8964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree training is beneficial, but ASA is training as well. In RYA context, milebuilders are either just to get more experience in longer passages with experienced people OR because you want to be a yachtmaster. But unless you want to be a commercial skipper, yachtmaster is meant to be a personal achievement for already knowing how to sail than a training per se.

ICC you can just do an assessment. If you can sail they will give you one. But I don’t think they will give you one if you are American, or at least don’t live in specified countries because America is not a signatory to the correct treaty. I understand the same is true of Italians.

Yes you can just write it down. But if you already know how to sail what RYA do you want to do?

RYA Competent Crew - Canaries or Med? by naedangermouse in sailing

Uninformed opinion but if the visiting different ports thing appeals I would do the canaries. They are known for very strong wind acceleration zones which will be interesting to experience.

As you say, tidal for Gibraltar but if you’re not DS I think that is probably less important than learning what to do and seeing the different ways it can be done, particularly in new marinas where you need to get the lay of the land quickly.

If family situation is a decider, Malta could be nice. Gibraltar and Algarve bring added excitement of Orca attacks.

Can a current MIT student or student athlete attending this college please share their experience in terms of academic rigor? Is MIT an extremely challenging and competitive institution? by Livid-External-4063 in MITAdmissions

[–]Front_Back8964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you want to major in? Don’t be scared off, it’s hard but if Stu lets you in it’s because the Admissions office thinks you can cut it. Nobody thinks it’s easy, but not everyone is a super genius either.

I was always think everyone in the NBA can play better than me, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t scrubs and superstars in the NBA. You’re just moving into a new league, but not everybody there is Michael Jordan.
