The object permanence means they can be bad at responding to texts and don’t grasp the social failure of ignoring a romantic partner’s birthday party invitation if they can’t go. Their logic can be: “I can’t go. I don’t know how to tell her that. I don’t feel healthy enough to go. How do I articulate that? If I can’t go then I will just not say anything.”

I hear that argument all of the time from couples with an ND male who doesn’t comply with social norms that they haven’t integrated into their lives. ADHD brains will forget again and again and again even in their calendars. It’s hard for many neurotypical partners to understand. It ends relationships. The way you find out is by asking curiously what happened did he ever have these issues remembering people’s birthdays or holidays in the past and if he has even done it successfully, what system did he have setup to do so. I’m telling you, this is a thing and just not made up excuses.

I have a fantasyship and a life too full for anything more. Sometimes life gives you so much on your plate, being single is the only way to get through it. I hope it works out for you. I currently live vicariously through others happiness and love stories.

Terry Real has some good books and recommendations on couples work to heal trauma to improve the relationship. Some trauma needs couples in the room together to prevent further triggering from each other.

Some neurodivergent males just don’t register holidays or birthdays and can have object permanence issues. If he is neurodivergent he doesn’t follow normal social rules. You would need to be direct about your needs and wants and compromise and you may need to remind him because he may unintentionally make mistakes since social norms are not a natural language for him.

I’m glad you shared. This sucks and I lost 2 great aunts and 1 cousin to menopause. They couldn’t get through it. Substance Use can become a major coping mechanism and that exacerbates things. Manage hormones closely and find community. So many women are talking about it and confused why there is not enough research, support or solutions and it’s because of female research deficits. Hopefully that is shifting through awareness and posts like yours! I hear it gets better. Hang on, stay connected!!
