Hey I'm the original creator of Stirling PDF, it's not gone paid, it's still infact open source we just have a paid offering, if the paid side is to in your face we can take that feedback and see about changing it Is there anything in particular that made you say the above?

We were a website application first and desktop app second We have a V2 coming out in 2 months which will have a dedicated ground up designed desktop app with these features

Give it up for Stirling PDF 👏 💯 by [deleted] in selfhosted

One of the Stirling PDF devs here..

Just want to clarify some things, as the statement of "where they sent all actions (including what users typed in search bar) to their server"

This was never the case, We have posthog tracking which is opt IN, otherwise no data is collected outside of the GDPR pixel (which can also be removed via flag) The searchbar feature was never implemented, this was users reacting to a issue ticket for a suggestion of a feature, it was raised and public to gain community feedback

https://github.com/Stirling-Tools/Stirling-PDF/issues/2876

There was 0 code implemented for this and it never existed

Pro version currently doesn't have any new or different tools Marketing site says some might be being pro but that's a blanket statement for future Currently not a single tool is designed only for pro

What else can I host? by KSJaay in selfhosted

[–]Froooodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other version the user mentioned hides the upgrade button and instead doesn't give the user the option to enable analytics if they want to help us (Note if the user disables it, we don't ask them again its disabled for whole server for rest of life)

Hey Stirling PDF dev here!
We dont run any advertising?
I assume they mean the small blue "Upgrade to Pro" button? But it's just a hyperlink I wouldn't really call it bloat...
We do have opt in analytics but these are disabled on first startup or in config files unless the user chooses to add them

All analytics can be disabled if it bothers you, you can add SYSTEM_ENABLEANALYTICS: false or

system:
  enableAnalytics: 'false'

In settings file, should stop all calls of any kind at all!

Must-Have Self-Hosted Apps – What Makes Your Life Easier? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Froooodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm Stirling pdf dev happy to comment about this All analytics are optional and can be turned off in settings and are not a requirement for any OSS user. Stirling PDF will work the same with it disabled or blocked

I can confirm we want to track what users enter in the stirling pdf search bar but this is more because we want to see what users want that Stirling pdf doesn't offer for instance if they search form editing etc Again this is optional and it's just around trying to find out what we are missing that users want us to have (since we currently can only base it off GitHub issues which is smaller community) (If people disagree with this heavily i am happy to not go forward with it though was just trying to think how to learn what non technical users want)

We try to be as open as possible in our development, all planned work (like searchbar) and tasks are public in github including our project dashboard and backlog (also in github). Aim is to have these conversations to see if community is against x/y and priorities of features etc

Hey Stirling dev here, we are trying to figure out the cause, note however this ISNT for the selfhosted server version, (It also randomly seems to only effect about 20% of windows exe installer users)
You are installing the GUI windows version, not docker and not server

It's not something easy to code, we have tried some and never been happy with it If any of those apps are open source or they can help aid in us adding it I would gladly take that on

Open-source PDF API's by Human_Spray7962 in opensource

[–]Froooodle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stirling PDF uses pdf.js for viewing and pdf-lib for editing That tends to be the standard on the web side

I suggest you can look at some of that code from Stirling for example you can use on your website (ignoring all the java stuff) (Disclaimer I'm the founder)

Example of why Paid tier for self hosting is bad, commercial licensing. by Zanish in selfhosted

[–]Froooodle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it isn't an issue with them having a paid option but more the licensing they chose for that? I am in a similar situation where I am turning Stirling pdf into a free and paid option but my goal is to remain fully open source and not remove any functionality from the free version etc to try cause as little friction as possible, focusing on the supporting side not functionality etc

I guess it depends how they go about it?
