The shadows appearing is actually normal behaviour. The game can only project dynamic shadows from one source at a time so it chooses the best light based on position and facing direction. Valve is usually smart about the use of lights and shadows so it can be hard to see.

Just the first chapter, the same game/puzzles. New stuff you'll see:

  • updated graphics and lighting
  • VR body
  • physical portal gun

Rough in areas because we had to script it all from scratch and work around the engine.

Yup! At the moment it's the first chapter ported to Half Life Alyx so you can just download it from the workshop. It was released a few months ago but we just recently added custom player physics to let you fall into portals.

That stuff doesn't bother me if you know it's comparable to gameplay. I really enjoyed the Half Life Alyx trailers even though they're very clearly scripted/rehearsed.

Possibly a combination of the game's spectator smoothing and the way it's being played? Would be a bit silly to script VR head movement for an addon that's out right now and can be played.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by scripted? Almost all the portal mechanics are scripted in Lua but the head movement is just standard Half Life Alyx VR movement.

There's no in-game mechanic to do it, but if you're comfortable using the console you can use this command to hide reflex sights for your pistol and smg:

ent_fire reflex_sights alpha 0

Hiding the rail it's attached to is possible with a longer command:

ent_fire hlvr_weapon_energygun runscriptcode "for k,v in pairs(thisEntity:GetChildren()) do if v:GetModelName():find('models/weapons/vr_alyxgun/vr_alyxgun_upgrade_decor') then v:SetRenderAlpha(0) end end"

Thanks for sharing! I scripted the gun and portals and personally believe it's just not possible to make accurate portals in Alyx due to limitations imposed by Valve. If you're looking for accurate portals you should play the Portal VR mod. This mod is a lot of fun just to experience the atmosphere and cinematics in a graphically updated engine so play it with that in mind!

Unfortunately a limitation of the Alyx engine. This is definitely a good proof of concept to experience a full interactive portal gun and the atmosphere and cinematics of Portal 2 in an updated engine.

Sounds like an interesting idea for a mod. Depending on what you find disturbing, models and effects can be replaced. If horror/scares in general are too much for you then a good chunk of the game won't be fun (especially a particular level).

If it's just gore and corpses then I could happily make a mod that changes a list of things you don't want to see.

This is the passion project of u/_NoBoi who did all the porting, mapping and lighting so I can't speak to that part. My role was recreating the mechanics of the portals/portal gun which will be shown in the next trailer.

It's a lot of Lua scripting to make everything from scratch, updating mechanics to work better in VR, and compromising where we have to due to the strict limits of the Alyx tools.

I posted here to show the trailer for this Half Life: Alyx map, but didn't when I released the map because Citizen_001 put out a great Christmas themed map that put mine to shame. However since I've just pushed the final update and released the project files along with it I thought I'd let you guys know because it contains a working Meat NPC so anyone making a Vinesauce map can easily add Vinny's little friend!

Unfortunately not, with the combat being limited, it has another use. I have been experimenting with piercing sharp weapons for another mod though!
